Mazda Unveils New Turbocharged Miata in L.A.
2004 Mazdaspeed MX-5 Miata Available in Spring By Jennifer Shatwell LOS ANGELES, Jan. 5, 2004 (FCN) -- Mazda is putting another new twist on its famous open-top, two-seat roadster -- and giving it some extra zoom. Making its official debut at the 2004 Los Angeles Auto Show, the turbocharged Mazdaspeed MX-5 Miata is designed for the Miata enthusiast who demands even more power. A turbocharged 1.8-liter, four-cylinder engine lies within and rallies 25 percent more horsepower and 33 percent more torque for even better acceleration than before. The engine block is modified to handle this extra power, the cooling system boasts increased capacity, the six-speed manual transmission, clutch and pressure plate, driveshaft and differential all are optimized, and a new intercooler has been added. "With Mazdaspeed MX-5 Miata, we took a renowned sports car and further enhanced its performance with carefully selected modifications, all the while remaining true to Miata's famed spirit," says Robert Davis, senior vice president of marketing and product development for Mazda North America Operations. The new Miata's already agile and able chassis is dropped 7 millimeters to better hug the road. Tuned dampers soak up vibrations, while larger front and rear stabilizer bars and a silver-painted front strut tower brace increase chassis rigidity and improve road-holding capability. With sports smoked headlamps on either end of a unique front under-spoiler with recessed projector fog lamps, there's no doubt this Mazdaspeed MX-5 Miata is a performance machine. It even sounds sporty with a carefully tuned exhaust muffler for just enough "vroom-vroom." As if the wind in your hair and blue skies above weren't enough reason to leave the top down, the roadster's interior features two-tone seats that drivers will want everyone to see. Black cloth seating surfaces with red centers can be made black leather bucket surfaces with red stitching -- the only factory option available with the Grand Touring Package. Silver instrument panel gauges showcase the Mazdaspeed logo, as do the foot pedals, stainless steel scuff plates, floor mats and body-colored rear view mirror cap. For optimized tunes to backdrop its performance-enhanced ride, the Mazdaspeed MX-5 Miata features a 225-watt, six-speaker Bose sound system with six-disc CD changer and speed-sensing automatic volume control. And it's all set at an unbeatable price point. Dressed in Velocity Red Mica or Titanium Gray Metallic and capped with a black vinyl soft top, Mazda's turbocharged roadster comes fully equipped starting at $25,500. The new Mazdaspeed MX-5 Miata is set to go on sale for North American markets in spring 2004 and will be covered by Mazda's comprehensive four-year/50,000-mile warranty and a five-year/unlimited-mileage corrosion warranty. "Mazdaspeed is the name given to the best of the best Mazda vehicles, and we're pleased to start off the New Year with the introduction of the Mazdaspeed MX-5 Miata," says Davis.
