Were there ever turbo Proteges??

I have a delema and I hope you could help me figure out what to do?

A friend at my local Performance Improvements store (Guelph, Ontario) has an MX-6 V6...nice car...anyways he sourced a J-spec 2.5L V6 (?)from a company in Toronto for $2000.oo with only 40,000kms. That is quite a nice price! They have many overseas motors for lotz of cars.
In the not so distant future I would like to possibly change the engine in my car (when the lease is up...about 18 mos.)
My choices are a 2.5L V6, if it will fit ('99 Protege LX-T 1.8L/5spd) Is this even possible?($$ is not unlimited) OR a turbocharged version of the 1.8L DOHC currently in my car.
In GranTourismo2 there is a '90 Protege GT-X. Its a 1st Gen car with All-wheel-drive and a 175-ish hp 1.8L engine.
Is this car real or fake?
Is this the same 1.8L as the 3rd Gen?
I understand the 1.8L V6 from the MX-3 is the same family as the 2.5L (yes/no?) and can I use MX-3/1st Gen parts to install the V6 in my 3rd Gen?
Basically I was looking at how much it would cost to get my car to give me the numbers I wanted and realized that I would be spending lotz-o-$$ with the original engine.
Currently this is a dream...but with your help the reasearch could lead to reality!!

I want to buy a P5 and I went to test drive it I was disappointed in the engine. I have a 1986 Mazda 626 LX Turbo. It is a two litre. It was made in JAPAN. After 87 they are the MX6 or Probe not longer Japanese, and it was also turbo charged until 93 when, Mystere lx and Probe gt got v6's, and the 626 went protege. That's all the info I got. Let me tell you when I left the lot in my 86 with 290,000 km's it will blow the doors of any new P5. That puppy goes. Still love the P5 though STYLE or SPEED I guess. I am picking my P5 up in three weeks still trying to get vibrant yellow. Hope the injen and bossal mods I plan make a difference in the lacking pony dept.

Rebel, to anwser your questions, the Jspec 2.5L KL-ZE V6 engine (200 HP stock) has never been swapped into the 3rd Gen Protege to my knowledge. It has been swapped into the 1st Gen Protege however. Many people question whether the 3rd Gen Protege has enough room in the engine compartment for this swap. The 1.8L turbo engine in the GTX or GTR Protege/Familia/323 is based on the 1.8L DOHC BP engine in the '90-'98 Protege, not the 1.8L DOHC FP engine in the '99-'00 Protege. Corksport did perform this swap in their 3rd Gen drag Protege, but it was apparently difficult enough that they don't recommend anyone trying it. The GTX version of the 1.8L BPT engine produced 180 HP and the GTR version produced 210 HP. The 1.8L V6 in the MX-3 is from the same KL series engine family as the 2.5L V6, and has identicle external dimensions, but the MX-3 shared it's chassis with the 1st Gen Protege and not the 3rd Gen. Whether those parts can be used to swap the V6 into the 3rd Gen is anybodys guess at this point.

FP vs. BP = another question!

What is the difference between the FP and the BP 1.8L engines? Is the BP the same as the Probe 2.0L? (I am a Ford/Mazda guy...and do speak Ford)
Because the Probe 4-cyl (circa 94-ish) looks strangely like my engine, cam cover, intake runners etc.
Is the 2.0L used in the newer 626s and 01-up Proteges the same family as the FP I most likely have?

Also, is there anywhere I can find the engine code on my car?

Aye,

Okay, here we go again...

I have a new and quite inexpensive idea (possibly).
I have a turbocharger from a 2.3L Ford Thunderbird Turbocoupe (aka Garret T3 type) with low milage. I'm thinking of a mating ritual. I have experience with turbocharging but not with anything non-factory engineered.
I have an e-mail into CorkSport reguarding lower compression pistons (about 8.0:1) so I can run higher boost levels (about 10psi)with an air-to-air intercooler (about 12"x6" core). <<Otherwise be limited to about 6psi>>
Any other ideas of someone I can contact?
The BPT engine and my FP have the same cylinder dimensions (83x85) so, I'm wondering what the possibility of using those pistons if another new aftermarket set can't be found.
Also, are there any short comings of Mazda's ECM reguarding boost? I will obviously have to run a turbo timer/boost controller and probably a blow-off valve (they sound cool anyways) as the timing will have to be retarded under boost conditions.
Also, I would have to get a manifold custom made as I assume no one has yet tried this and survived?
If anyone has any ideas where to look/surf or talk for info, please let me know.

PS--> Were there any turbo-ed 4-cyl motors in 93-up MX-6/626? I drove a turbo 626 along time ago (box-y looking) but I cant remember what year of car it was. I know the Probe had a 2.2L turbo circa 90-91, and I assume then the 626/MX-6 did also.

Regarding the ECM, most Miata guys who turbo (Flying Miata kit) their cars generally toss the factory unit in favor of an Electromotive Tech II unit. Honestly, I don't know much about it or how to set it up. Sport Compact Car have done some tech articles on using it, the ones I remember seeing were for Miatas and Impreza 2.5 RS, the latter was a "reinventing the wheel" project like boosting the F-series 4-cyl. One thing I noticed on both were the MAF sensor was discarded in favor of a speed density type set-up, like on Hondas and old Mustangs. I hope you have good luck unlocking this motor's potential!

where to find oil...

Let me look into my crystal ball...
I see a FP-ZE engine...turbocharged...200hp...but where the hell do I get/return oil from?

Most turbo setups pull oil from a pressure sender tee. Where is the oil pressure sender located? Does anyone see any problems with oil pressure if I were to put a tee fitting where the sender is and draw oil from there? I don't suppose there would be, my 2.3L turbo Ford motor only had 40-60psi @ 2000RPM(normal). Also there wouldn't be any "nifty" place to insert a return line would there? I don't like the idea of just welding a line into the side of the oil pan...seems a bit "cheezy"!

a little history:
6's
86-87 626 turbo: FE 2.0l 8 valve turbo. 125hp(i thinks) someone here said it was fast, but anything can be made fast. all mazda.
88-92 626/mx-6/probe GT: F2 2.2l 12 valve turbo. 145hp(disputed as to whether it's wheel or crank, i say crank) i owned one, previous owner was a moron so it destroyed itself in my hands "where did this 23psi come from?!" kinda fast to mad fast. all mazda
side note: for a few years of the GD chassis (88-92) there was a motor made by mazda, never really released in america. 170hp NA 2.0l 16 valve. IMHO this is the best 4 cylinder made by mazda, if not in the world (flame all you want)
93-97 626/mx6/probe: FS 2.0l 16 valver 130ish hp. screwed up version of the older F engines (opinion) this is the exact motor in the 3rd gen prot's 1.8 and 2.0's.
3's
86-89 323 turbo: B6T 1.6 16 valve. 132hp. great little motor, won a few rallies, i like it cause my car weighs 2350lbs. revs like crazy, unlike the old 12v mx6 i had. base cars had a 85ish hp 8 valve.
90-94 lots of different motors, but you all know the regular prots so i'll just list from my memory
1st gen
1.6 sohc 85hp "B6"
1.6 dohc 100hp "B6D"
1.8 sohc 108hp "BP"
1.8 dohc 125hp "BPD"
2nd
1.5 dohc 98hp "Z-something"
1.8 dohc 122hp "BPD"
3rd
1.6 dohc 100hp "another Z something"
1.8 dohc 125hp "FP"
2.0 dohc 130,140hp "FS"
and that's not counting the good engines we never get....

FS series

Now if the FS-D fits in the probe abd protege and the KL series(2.5L) fits in the same probe, wouldn't the the 2.5 be an easy swap besides the ECU and the wiring harness?

i doubt it. the reason that you can swap the 2.5 into the BG chassis relatively easily is because in other markets, it got the V6 in it to begin with.

okay...this has bothered me enough!

I have to go measure my engine bay and then chase down a MX-3 V6 and measure it's engine bay...then park them together and compare the design of the subframes, firewall & mountings. I'll let you know if I get lucky!

it's not really worth it IMHO. 1. a v6 versus and of mazda 4 cylinders is a serious weight/weight ratio issue. 2. why the v6 anyway? power? mazda 4's make just as much if not more than others. my friend has a 2.0 FE3 that makes 600hp. and 3. a 4-cyl was meant for your car, why mess with nature?
