I would like to know if anyone knew what was the maximum amount of boost from a turbo that the protege5 can take?

 

Are we talking about a completely stock engine or are we just talking about the engine block and stock internals or just the block itself??

 

Also take into account fuel and timing control. That's crucial.

I heard 10 lbs on the MazdaSpeed Protege

thats a T25

 

The Mazdaspeed runs 6.9 PSI of boost stock. You maybe able to crank that up to 10 PSI though.

 

I thought it was set at 6.9 , but at 10# it will blow. Ms has some sort of safty feature to prvent that though.

 

To clear up confusion.

Mazdaspeed's car is set to 6.9 psi. At 10 psi of boost, the ECU will shut down. I'm not sure of the exact mechanism here, but basically it's there in anticipation of people screwing around with fishtank bleeders trying to blow up their cars. Mazda quotes the strength limits of the bottom end as 12 psi.

to keith........ i've heard it mentioned that a protege with the FM turbo will more than likely produce more power than the Mazdaspeed protege. why is this? is it just because of the different turbo? what boost do you guys plan to acheive with the P5 in testing? thanks for your help on our board!

 

We almost have 170 hp at the wheels with 6 psi on 91 octane gas.

The amount of power you get per psi will depend on the efficiency of the turbo, the IC, the amount of backpressure, the aggressiveness of the timing and a whole raft of factors.

We don't quote flywheel hp for our tests, because we can't measure it. We only quote the wheel hp from our dyno. Flywheel hp is great for marketing, but that's all it is. Marketing.

Not having had the chance to examine a MS Protege, I can't say exactly where the differences lie. Manufacturers are always biased towards small turbos, as they don't want any lag whatsoever. This will often be at the expense of top end. We share a similar attitude and I can't say I find our setup laggy, but there it is. It could also be that Callaway just didn't do all that good a job.

We're setting up our car to run at 8 psi. More than that, and you'll need different fuel/timing management. You could also need a different transmission - we're going to proceed slowly to learn how the car behaves under boost.

i agrued with a bunch of people on another thread about this but no was agreeing with me. It was the MazdaSpeed dealship information thread. But after thinking for a lil bit. I don't think it was Mazdas intentions to make a powerfull off the line car. I think they were still thinking about the twists and turns thing. According to what some else said on this thread with a smaller turbo its less lag. And with the LS diff it would make a killer car coming out of the turns. so one a straight away, yeah IMO the MS will get beat by alot of sport compacts, but in the mountains, they don't have a chance in hell. Just MY .02

 

It seems like limiting is bad but you have to remember that 10psi on a 4 banger can be damaging and theres lots of people that buy cars not knowing there limits.
all it takes is one twist of the *** and bang there goes 30000 dollors. personally I think 170hp is pretty a pretty good mix of fuctionality and drivibility. I dont doubt this car will put a big smile on your face. besides enyone can drive in a strait line.

I'd like to know if the ms pro is 170 at the wheels since both fm pro and the callaway are running similer boost
I know the late rx-7s were at the wheels 255hp at 6.7psi
with a limiter at 8psi (correct me if i'm wrong)
Man I miss Turbo II

 

The MS Protege is rated at 170 at the flywheel. I've seen some dyno runs that put it in the 150 wheel hp range. Remember, it's a smaller turbo with a different intercooler than the FM kit.
