Intercooler Kits & Turbo Manifolds Done!

Well last night we finally finished prototyping the new turbo kit for BP DOHC motors.

We ended up able to run a 3" downpipe with an external wastegate, but should be able to get the same with a internal wastegate with a slight bit of mods to our design. This pipe clears the A/C as well.

The intercooler setup looks awesome and is off getting powder coated right now. Here are some pics below, Enjoy. Expect the kits to start around $1500 without the intercooler and around $2500 with.

That appears to be really sweet. I'm not in the Protege market anymore. But let me know if you make a turbo for the 6. :D

ok now 'bout that 3rd gen 1.6 manifold & intercooler...whats the update on that???

turboge October-9th-2002 06:48 PM

The prototype car is still at the body shop getting painted and shaved. Not sure when its going to be complete but after its back the kit will only take a week to finish.

macdaddyslomo October-9th-2002 06:52 PM

thanks for the quick reply..it should be priced about the same then???

turboge October-9th-2002 07:19 PM

Yes, pricing will be similar, using the same components just a different manifold configuration.

braden, have you guys dyno'd any of these cars yet to see what gains you're getting. i havent followed the other threads too much, so sorry if you already posted it. :) and, stupid question... but are you sending these kits out as-is (like the pictures) or are pipes going to be polished or powder coated or anything? just curious about the appearance of the kit.

turboge October-9th-2002 11:28 PM

The last kit we threw on a Miata, without our intercooler setup. It had a cheesy FM-II kit with piping... managed to tune it to 295whp @ 12psi with 270lb-ft to match.... its a killer setup!

Identity_X October-10th-2002 11:26 AM

that's a sweet looking setup you got going.......
make sure you post some pics when you powder coat it..............

The kits will be painted black, or silver. We can powder coat them at an additional cost, this one is getting powdercoated and I have pictures of other kits we've made that are painted. They can be sent bare "as-is" with welds if you want to use your own color of paint.

Would you recommend either a BPT swap or just putting on a turbo kit??? Basically.... What are the benefits of each method for turboing the Pro?

Thanks!:D

Have you found a test car to do a 1.5L turbo yet? if you do will the set up cost a lot more or around the same.

Turboge,

What brand and number is the turbocharger? What is the engine number and specs? Litre and compression ratio. The valve cover looks exactly like the BPT power plant except the inlet manifold.

Uh....I didn't see a blow-off valve and the AF sensor. This engine doesn't use a MAF sensor? I saw the air filter is at the bottom. Hmmmmm.....interesting.

Cost wise, I have to reserve my actual experience.

Personally I prefer to pop on the turbo to the existing motor. As long as it is in good condition you won't have any more problems with tuning it than you would on a GTX. You will however need the larger injectors.

No test car, same general prices. Just need the orders.
