Getting a used Turbo
 

Anyone know if I can get a Turbo from a used car (maybe one from a scrap yard) and use it in my Protege?

Not that I REALLY want to, just want to know if it is possible, and if so, what type of car should I be looking for?

probably an eclipse, talon or possibly laser. A 3000GT or Stealth may work as well. Not really sure what turbos the 3000Gt or Stealth use though. The three DSM cousins use T25s i believe.

Do you know what it would take to get it installed??

I use the T25 in my kit good for low boost apps but not High RPM apps perfect for our pros since we don't have too high reving engines. If you are looking for higher effiecency though go with a T3 that can be found in Saab's and GN's ...when getting a used turbo though make sure it has very little to no shaft wobble or else you might have to get hte turbo rebuilt also which is advised anyways with a used unit.

What type of cost would it be to buy one from the scrapyard??

To get it put on you need a full custom kit with header downpipe, gauges, BOV, RRFPR, charge puiping, intercooler, and all sorts of fittings and lines...have fun!!!!!:eek:

Nice, well near my dad's Machine Shop, are several car shops, and everyone always help's each other around here. I'm sure if I got everything, they'd be able to help me out... is there any "Turbo's for Dummies" website out there?? I just wanna make sure that I know what kinda cost I'll be getting into, and what parts, etc etc I'll need.... Thanks again!!

Go to www.homemadeturbo.com and that will give you an idea of what need to go into it and what not to do...It is for hondas but the concept is the same. You can get a turbo from a junkyard for anywhere between 50 bucks and 800 bucks it just depends on how good the turbo is and where it came from in most cases you get what you pay for here. Check out ebay also. I bought my T25 from a rebuilder already rebuilt and ready to go. www.turbocity.com is where i bought mine from.

Which engine does your car have? The 1.6L or 1.8L? I don't know of any turbo manifold for the 1.6L, and only one for the 1.8L/2.0L engines. You will need a turbo that mates to the flange on the exhuast manifold, which I believe is a Garrett based turbo for the Turbonetics manifold.

The Turbonetics manifold has a T3 flange mated to it so if you planned on using a T25 you are SOL or if you used an IHI turbo. If you have the 1.6 you will need to go with a custom manifold and if you don't want to shell out 500+ bucks for the turbonetics manifold then you can get one made for around 300.

The T25 will still puch the Pro pretty hard at our higher RPM's Honda guys just nag about them because their redlines are way above ours normally. The T25 will push hard though not as hard as a T3 but again this is to keep cost down to a minimum.

Check out www.dsmtrader.com. ...T-25's out the wazoo. I got a perfect T-25 off of a 1996 eclipse with 10k for $150. They usualy run in the 75-400 range depending on condition. If the wheels are good and the exhaust housing isn't all cracked up you can get a rebuild kit for $130 and do the job yourself.

They also have Eclipse BOV's for about $40-75. For Eclipse cars 1'st gen BOV's are the best one's. 1996 Sabb 9000's also have a great Bosch plastic BOV for $50 or so new, and around $20 used. Great price, great valve.

Well that is what my kit is being designed for, not a full balls out turbo kit ready for race and rally. I'm thinking of the daily driver out there that wants a little more to his Pro not the full race scene. That market is not big enough to do the full R&D on a project that scale. If someone wanted to mod my kit to a full race that would be their deal.

For autocrossing, the T25 makes a GREAT turbo. It doesn't have the "wait, wait, wait, OHHHH SHIT" power band that a bigger turbo will provide, which will really help control wheel spin while autocrossing.

In my 1.6L mirage, it gives almost a flat torque curve (I'm basing this on feeling) from 2500-7000rpm. And has no problem holding 15psi. Which I don't consider to be low boost.

On the DSMs those turbo's can't hold 15psi, but those engines are maximized for turbo usage. Basically they like to ingest HUGE amounts of air and the T25 just can't keep up with it.
