Want to turbo charge your FS engine?
 

Some of you may have heard of Thomas Knight Engineering, who produces a turbo kit for the FS engines in 3rd gen Proteges. His kit is based on a custom built log type manifold that's less than attractive. Opinions on his kits are mixed. But now I've heard that Turbonetics produces a turbo manifold for the FS engine also. It's a bit more expensive than the TKT manifold, but should be much better quality. I'll post more info after I call them.:D

Didn't know there were FS engine in our US Protege's, could have sworn we had the FL-03 I4.
Am I wrong.

According to the factory service manual, it's an FS engine. The '93+ Probe/MX-6/626 guys refer to there engines as FS-03's. There engines are similar, but have a distributor.

Where should one look to find out which engine they have (for sure)?

HEH i've heard that the exhaust manifold and turbo from a 1989 mazda 323gtx fit' s the 2000 1.8 engine......is this true.....i'm trying to put a 91 626 gt turbo on my car but i don' t know what to do .....can anyone help me , what preping do i have to do :confused: Blue :eek: :rolleyes: :D :o :) ;) :p :( The FInger

actually i was thinking of getting a custom exhaust header and using the 626 turbo........what do i have to do to prep my engine for a turbo.....i have an exhaust and intake....but what do i need to doBlue Blue Blue Blue Blue Blue Blue Blue Blue

The FS and FP engines were loosely derived from the earlier F, F2, and FE engines from Mazda, but the bore spacing and deck height were reduced so almost none of the parts will fit between the engines, including the exhaust manifold. The bore spacing and deck height of the FS/FP engines is the same as the BP engine, so IF the bolt pattern AND the port location were the same between the BP and the FS/FP engines, the manifold might actually fit. Anyone up for an experiment?
To install a turbo on your current N/A engine requires several things, and depends on how much boost you want to run. You will need to beef up the fuel system to be able to deliver the additional fuel that will be burned. That includes things like a higher capacity fuel pump, adjustable or rising rate fuel pressure regulator, higher flowing fuel injectors, etc. You should also use an air/fuel ratio gauge to monitor the mixture, so you know your not running lean. You'll need electronics to control the turbo, ignition timing, and fuel delivery. Of course you will need all the mechanical components associated with the turbo, manifold, downpipe, intercooler, intake piping, wastegate, blow off valve, etc. Anything else I missed guys?

LAser SR2 XPlod by Ford, looks like a P5, same engine from what I see and I'm not an engine expert, however it's got Turbonetics T3/T4 from what I understand...... Would that turbo fit on some of our cars???? I don't know much about engines, so sorry if this is a dumb question........

:crying: Thats a lot of stuff. So if a turbo kit came out for the new protege's would it have all of that stuff included with it?
How much would a turbo kit cost? Also, how much would that briefcase full of cash be holding? Guess for me, please.:D

That's what we all want to know! I'd guess $3000 to $4500, depending on how complete the kit is. Just a guess though.

dunno what the engine letters are etc... I will try and look it up tonight. T4 i think is a little big for out engines... a T3 would do nicely IMO... OR... I was thinking maybe a turbo from the GSX... dunno gotta look into it a bit more...

look at the car, and read about it, looks like the mp5, it's from ford (ford <-->mazda), from what I read somewhere it's got a 2.0....... and there's turbo kits for it.......

The 2L Zetec used in Focus's is entirely different from the 2L used in our Pro's. I have talked to a few companies about their already existing kits and they won't work.

Really the turbo isn't the big problem, it's the bracketry and possible fuel and ignition upgrades that may have to go with it.
