FM turbo Protegé install pictures

We've been installing the FM Protegé turbo kit on our P5. This is the kit that was known as the BEGI. The photos are on our website at http://www.fmprotege.com . The site also has our stock dyno runs.

The car's now up and running. It's very happy. We have just a bit of tuning to do, then it hits the dyno.

VERY cool Keith. Great to see you guys launch a whole new site for the Protege too. Damn, as if I didn't spend enough of my money with you guys for my Miata

Nate! You don't want a turbo, do you?

One of the reasons we have a prototype is so we can test the car and see exactly what it needs. Injectors? We'll see. Fuel pump? Looks good so far. I expect we'll see the P5 on the dyno before the end of the weekend. It will be well instrumented so we can see where the weak points are.

The final cost of the kit will depend on exactly what is needed. We're expecting between $3000 and $3500.

The cost of an install at a shop will depend on the shop itself. We've only done the one so far, with lots of stops for experimentation, documentation and examination so we can't draw any conclusions yet.

Not a lot of hard answers, eh? Well, it's better than me making something up....

Hehe, not right now probably but perhaps in a few years when the warranty is closer to up and I see how the rest of the car (namely the tranny and engine) take to boost long term...

$ of install

It also depends where you live what the hour labor rates are. I know my dealer here in Maryland has rates of $61 an hour the local tuner shops can charge up to $80 and hour for specialized stuff. But up the road an hour north in PA they charge rates of $30 and hour for work. I would suggest if you want to do major engine work such as a turbo install you do the research edgu-ma-cate yourself and do the install yourself so you know what the hell is going on and can tune it your self unless your money tree produces money so fast you can't spend it quick enough and if so why mess with turboing a Protégé go get yourself something factory turboed and when the CEL comes on pull into the dealer and let it be fixed under warranty. Just my two cents.
I pride myself in that when some freaking pimple face comes up and says what kit is that I say the Dave P. kit done by his partners him himself and I!
Any-who good luck!

He sort of anserwed my question...Plus I was at a loss to put anything else on this thread to keep an eye on it.

I know labor rates change, and installing yourself is all very well and good. But, I don't have anywhere to work on a car presently, nor do I have the tools.

Having a qualified shop do the install, such as FM, is much better than me spending hours tracking down tools, floor space and knowledgeable people to help me do the install myself. If I can learn and watch the install process as professionals do it, so much the better. But that is just MHO...

hey keith and nate on here.

Hey I was curious(same q on the miata forum) but why the AFPR. I though the P5 used a returnless fuel system. Did you guys make a return line?

Pitlab, you were told wrong. The P5 has a return line.

I expect the Protegé install will be similar to the Miata System 4.2 install time. That's 12.5 hours/$815 here at FM.
