It depends on who you talk to, and what kinda mood the cop is in, I would say 20% in the back is alright because of the way our car is classified. Anyways, thats what I plan on doing, 20% in the back, 35% up front.

well, just for you pro-heads in pa, it is now ILLEGAL to have any tint on your car that did not come factory.... or actually, the new law isn't certain percentages on certain windows, your car windows must allow 70% of light to pass through, which basically means, the windows that mazda ships out already allow the minimum amount of light to shine through. i can't explain the details or how it actually works out, but it is NOW against the vehicle code... and the import scene around here is really starting to heat up, like wild-fire, i just can't wait for pa to slam us with more ****. so far, any interior lighting that is not stock is scrutinized, not necessarily ticketed. anything blue visible outside of your car is illegal... i don't know, stupid ****, trust me, i'm paying $200 dollars in fines over this stupid ****

Got my tints for $180 in Fort Lauderdale, FL. That was the lowest price anyone quoted me for the P5 (most wanted between $200 and $225). I got 15% tint on all windows except the sunroof and windshield. I want to do the windshield completely but I really don't want to get hassled. I bought this car as a sleeper that I can modify without the cops hassling me too much, and I think the full windshield tint would draw too much attention to the car from the highway patrol.

Not sure about the %, but it is not for blocking light, that's for sure. If guessing, about 50-75 % light gets through. Basically, I saw a car at NOPI Nationals with yellow tint, and I wanted it too. Very weird sitting in the car and looking out, especially at nite. Everything is yellow....If I saw a hit and run, and the police asked me for details, I would say, "Yeah, the yellow car hit the other yellow car, then the yellow guy ran behind the yellow building there..... "

35% for the Driver and Front Passenger window. 20% for the Rear passenger and Rear window. (Protege5 has side mirrors, so 20% should be fine in WA)

Not only illegal, but not very smart at all. Do you like to drive at night?

Window tint laws and stictness of enforcement vary GREATLY depending on where you live. In GA, the part Im in anyway, tons of cars have illegal tint but the cops dont hassel you over tint here. They make up for it by hassling you for everything else though....

Well, I remember MazdaSpeedWest made a long post about tinting a WHILE back - excellent info, BTW

Anyway - he DOES recommend a LIGHT tint on the entire windshield - like 50% or so. According to him, it does not affect night vision greatly, but it does cut down on glare significantly and can also help to keep the heat out of your car, while helping to keep your dash from cracking over time due to UV rays.

This, coming from a guy who owned his own tint shop for quite a few years.

So it IS done - and if it is light enough, no one will ever know, and you won't get hassled.

Just FYI....
