I never even knew this was up.
Glad to see you spredding the help Joe. I changed the 2nd gen size on protegemp3.com by the way. |
This may be a dumb question, but I'll risk the flames of wrath: When you say rear speakers, are you talking about the rear door speakers or the rear speakers on the back dash? I just noticed my Pro doesn't come with rear door speakers and I wanted to get some good add-ons.
Thanks! |
It is actualy listed differently.
The Pro sedan has rear 6x9s in the rear deck and nothing int the doors. Also it doesn't have any speaker wires in the rear doors either so it would't be just drop and go, you'd have to re run the leads fromthe rear deck over and into to the rear doors. The Protege 5 and MSP are the only protege with rear door speakers. These are 6.5" openings. |
I have a 2002 pro LX, and sound domain specifies the speaker sizes a little diff....they say 6 1/2" in the front door, and 6x8" in the back...thought that was wierd though...becuase I have 6 speakers...not just 4. 2 in front, 2 in back, and 2 on back dash....trunk, and I think those are 6x9's. Anyway, I ordered 2 sets, 6 1/2's. and 6x8's along with a new pioneer mp3 player, so I'll let you guys know how it sounds in a few weeks.

For more detailed infomation you can purchase
a detailed MasterSheet for your specific car from Crutchfield. I haven't received my purchase yet, but I'll fill you in... Anyone else use this infomation? It supposed to have detailed wiring info and frame layout for ease of installation. |

Good to know... Sir.
If nothing else i'll have the generous infomation you have provided. On another note you say that the sedan have speaker cutouts in the rear doors, but no speakers. I haven't took the doors off yet. But I know there is a pair of woofers underneath. I have a 03' LX. I'm guessing it's midbass, as only low notes generate from the speaker. |

Hi,
I have a friend who has a 2000 Protege ES with the 'Premium sound in it right now (the CD and Tape double din size thingy). She wants to put in a aftermarket deck, so according to the chart above. The wiring harness I need is either going to be the Metra: 70-7901 Scosche: MA02 and the kit I need will be either Metra: 99-5510, 99-5512, or 99-5700 Scosche: FM2157 Are those the correct numbers for her car and system? which do you guys like better Metra or Scosche? Are the special tools needed to remove the factory deck in that year? Thanks Chris. |

removing stock radio
i cannot figure out how to remove the stock radio from my 2002 protege 5. i have tried the how to guide you have and it still wont go. so how far in are the 2 "c" shaped rods supposed to go in untill i get to the release pin?
|
You gotta deal Sir.
I'm offshore right now, I'm due back in on the 17th. I'm make it a priority to confirm this when I arrive home with a picture, if I get my hands on a digital. I'll for know for sure when I place in my deck. It's getting lonely outhere... 19 down 9 to go... |

Welcome!! the "keys" on the side go in about 3/4 to 1 inch.....as I remember. if you are having trouble with the HOME MADE tools...as they work but are not PERFECT...you can go to somewhere like Walmart or Autozone and get TWO pair of the FORD U shaped headunit removal tools. IF you do that...one end will be inserted into the small hole and the other end will stick into the oblong opening in the middle between the two round holes. but only the end that goes into the ROUND hole actually engages anything. a pair of the ford tools cost about 4 or 5 bucks...so you would be out 8 to 10 greenbacks. |
I'm about to go get the harness and kit for my friends protege, are the ones I listed above the correct ones for her car?
thanks Chris. |
:tit:
Sorry... I felt like it.... |
was there a point to that or were you just being an Ass Clown?

Hey, look, I've been ask to test the admins of the forum, I have to see how much time they'll take to remove the post...
I would of not do that.. C yah |
you should try that over at www.protegemp3.com and see how long it takes :stickpoke

Somehow I've the exact same post twice, but the number of posts I have didn't increase. Please delete so I don't look like a dumbazz in a sticky. Thanks, Jordan |
Sup all. First off big thanks to Sir Nuke for the wiring, was a big help. Second thing. I recently installed a single unit into my protege, not sure which modle but its the SP20 one, only its not SP20, if u get wot i mean. newayz, yeah so the stock unit was a double, as in it took up the 2 slots, but my new one, JVC 405, is only a single slot one. Any tips on how to secure it in better, coz with my car, theres no side frames or anything for the new unit to sit on/in and i cant like the new units plate in, so yeah, its pretty easy to lift out n steal, which sucks.
So yeah, if anyone out there had the same problem, some solutions would be a kick ass help. |
I can see that the last reply to this thread was quite some time ago, but I'll give it a little input anyways. I can confirm 100% that the rear doors have no speaker in them for the 2000 sedan, however the opening is definately there. I have just recently installed (and I should have taken some pics. Damn!) a pair of 6.5" speakers in the doors and ran the wires. Since it's all running off of an amp in the trunk, it was just a simple pair of speaker wire runs under the doorsill into the trunk. The 6.5" speakers fit right in the door with no adaptor necessary, however, the door is just some raw metal with no pre-tapped holes. I just used a pvc shim to keep the speaker from grounding out against the door. With the addition of the rear door speakers, the rear deck 6x9's are now removed to allow more sound pressure levels from the trunk into the vehicle. The imaging is now much nicer without the reflection of the rear sound off of the rear window, and back seat passangers appreciate the lack of blaring 6x9s in their ears. It's an improvement all the way around as far as I'm concerned. I highly recommend the install, as it only took me like 1 hour or so. :bigthumb:

thax for the 411.............

anybody got a web site where i can get a dint kit for my 02 protege i really need one my car looks cheap with this cob one in my car thanks man....
|
I recently went to my local Best Buy-type store and they told me that my 2001 Pro Sedan had 6.5's in the front. I figure they are wrong but my roomate's 02 pro has 6x8 and their computers said that 02 pros have 6x8's... so i dunno.
Their computers are wrong, right? |
yeah the 02 pro does have 6x8's in the front and i think 6.5's in the rear doors....for all the people that have 02's so you know...
|
I have an 02 Pro and I have to say it was the easiest car I've ever installed a stereo in. I was surprised at how much of the car is actually just snapped into place, it made running the wires for the amp real easy. I am curious though as to how easy it was for JFanaselle to run the wires for the rear door speakers since I, too, just realized that the openings did in fact exist. I plan to fill them soon with some Pioneer 6.5s, but I do have one dilemma (on top of the ease of wire running to the door) would you run those speakers off the front channel or the rear channel? I have my subs running off my rear channel of my deck now, but I assume I could just get a set of Y-splitters and use it if I had to, but the front channel Preouts are still open, so if anyone has any input I would be glad to hear it.
|
It wasn't that difficult at all. I just tapped fresh holes in the door jamb with a drill bit, and pushed a rubber grommet in the hole so the insulation doesn't tear on the raw metal. You have to be a little patient with the drill, as it can be hard to reach in between the door without actually taking it off of the car. I don't think my holes are perfectly straight, but as long as they line up enough when the door is closed, the wire won't get pinched in the door jamb. As far as which channel to connect it to, just tap into the rear 6x9 wires if you're running an amplified signal off of your head unit. If you're setting it up like I did, the 6x9's will be removed, but you can just run the wires from their location back to the doors.
