New Car Smell Gone...

...and left a 'skunky' smell in it's place.

Did this happen to anybody else? Oh, and my grooming habits are very good, so no need to start telling me it's me!! :D

protetype May-27th-2002 12:46 PM

go to your local walmart... head over to the auto accessories section, and find the little chew-can look-a-like airfreshenors. pick up one called "mountain medley". stick it under your seat... smells like new again. ;D

:D Mountain Medley you say?

I prefer the vanilla one myself..

I want to avoid putting air fresheners in to mask it. I'd rather fix the smell and keep it neutral and skunk-free or at least the new car smell for as long as possible...

Do you think the skunk smell could be caused the sun baking my car all day and the new car smell getting ripe as a result?

protetype May-27th-2002 01:05 PM

oh... it actually does smell all funked up? :( n/m then. don't mask it! hehe. my new car smell just decided to up and leave one day. so i replaced it with that. :D smells like the new car smell, but... sweeter! awww. :p you checked around, make sure some sort of small animal didnt die in your car? lol. seriously though... look around under the hood, it's not uncommon for you to hit something, and pieces of it get stuck there and funk up the ride.

sandman May-27th-2002 01:16 PM

I checked and cleaned the interior to a spotless state (an obsessive compulsive would have been proud) but that didn't solve it. Never really checked under the hood for anything cuz it's not a continuous smell.. only there on warm days after the car's been sitting a while. Goes away as soon as the air starts circulating and stays gone till the car sits again.

Other than a skunk, know of anything that smells skunky when it gets warm? Does new car smell smell skunky when the car gets hot inside?

I'm almost due for a checkup at my dealer so maybe i'll mention it to them when i go in...

hihoslva May-27th-2002 09:01 PM

Start smoking cigarettes - that'll funk up any previous funk. Just ask my poor Protege - I wasn't gonna smoke in it, but about a mile from the dealership, the first dirty thing on the car was the cigarette lighter!

Damn - going up to $6 or more a pack here in NY soon - time to quit, or get a cheaper habit - like cocaine ;) (soon, hard drugs WILL be cheaper than smokes).

Oh, and about the stank - I've been reading that using the A/C can cause condensation in the vents, which soon turns to mildew in the hot sun - thus the stanky.

If you can spray some mildew killer - maybe even Lysol - down the vents, it might help. Then in the future, try to run the A/C, but with the temp UP for like 30 seconds before leaving the car. The warm, but dehumidified air (from the A/C still being on, but HOT) will get rid of excess moisture in the vents, and will warm them up so no more condensation occurs. Sounds like a pain, but you should only have to do this if you run the A/C on a long-ish drive - short trips probably don't cool the vents enough to cause major condesation.

Do a search, you'll find more info, I think.

Pro_fan May-28th-2002 12:36 AM

hihoslva may be right. If your smell is like mold/mildew then it's probably in the a/c system.

In regards to getting the new car smell back, I've seen a spray that is supposed to smell like new car. Seriously! My friend has some, but I haven't smelled his car lately :D

I'm not sure I'd use it though...it looked kind of like an oil and I wasn't sure what it would do to the seats. Oh well...thought I'd throw my $.02 in.

sandman May-28th-2002 01:05 AM

it's not mold/mildew smell... it's a SKUNK smell..

i know all about the AC stink problem and this ain't it...

ah well.. i'll track it down sooner or later.. need a nice day where i can spend some quality time and find where the funk is coming from...

i can tell you it's not from my left thigh, or my grandfathers feet...
;)

You know - I have to admit that I've noticed it too. Really does smell like skunk more than anything else.

hihoslva May-28th-2002 08:36 AM

sandman & jkb

A skunk smell? Like real skunk or that kind of "skunk" that is grown, dried, "combusted" and inhaled? :)

I'm only half kidding - sometimes weed will stink up your air filters and stuff - not accusing - just asking.

Nope.. none of the 'stinkweed' in my car!! Although the smell is very similar. Disgusting SKUNK smell.

Glad I'm not alone in this!

Did you guys have your car undercoated when you bought it? My car was pretty stinky for the first little while, and it was the undercoating that was the culprit.

!!!! i did !!!!!

But that was in February.. It didn't smell at all when I first got it, but mind you it was pretty cool out and smells generally stay hidden in the cold. Now that it's warming up outside I notice it all the time.

You think it could be that even though it's been like 3 months?

Was it a skunky smell?

The heat could be causing it to smell for sure. Stick you head in the wheel well and take a snort. :)

I don't know if it smelled like skunk...but it was an interesting smell for sure.

I still think mine has a faint odor even now.

Heh..

I'll have to try it.. Who knows, maybe it'll be a cheap high! :yumyum:

macdaddyslomo May-28th-2002 12:42 PM

actually what it is is you farting in the seats...cloth soaks it up like a sponge and then the heat releases it again when the car gets really hot...you might think im joking but im serious!! stop farting in your seats

Not me. Dealer undercoating is pure and simple just a waste of... well - I guess that'd be another thread.

The smell's not a big deal - it's pretty subtle. I just thought it was funny that someone mentioned it after I'd noticed it.

I heard from a friend that there was a swiss company that makes car perfume to smell like new cars. so u can buy a mazda smell or a ferrari smell if u want...

Sweedenhouse May-29th-2002 12:09 PM

I dunno I just use vanillaroma air freshners, and mad amounts of cannabis. My ride smells great.

hihoslva May-29th-2002 01:10 PM

Just don't spill the bong water, sweeden - that smell NEVER goes away!

leungwingkei May-29th-2002 02:00 PM

A plastic bag once got caught on the exhaust pipe, and the heat of the exhaust melted it. The car smelled of a nauseating plastic for a week.

sandman May-29th-2002 02:15 PM

Neuro - I smelled my undercoating - that wasn't it...

Maybe I should stop lettin em rip while i'm driving...

Hopefully it'll go away...

Oh noooo, trust me I have no intention of ever spilling bong water in there. I know that stuff reeks. In fact the only bong I have right now is my Yoda one, and it never leaves home. I never smoke j's in my ride either, don't wanna get ashes in my car. Just the little glass pilo, when done, hang it out the sunroof while driving and you got a clean pipe. Hell yeah.

This doesn't impare your ability to drive at all?

Nope, as a matter of fact it makes me drive safer. When was the last time you heard about a stoner in a high speed chase? Shit the top speed I get when I'm blunted is about 35 mph on my way to Taco Bell.

That is an interesting justification.

I've never done it, but it alters your state of mind, right? I'd say you were impaired.

hihoslva May-29th-2002 04:28 PM

Yes - driving while stoned is a bad idea. But anyone who has ever been or is a pot smoker will tell ya' (s)he's done it tons of times.

Sweed - dunno about the driving safer idea - you sound like my buddy who says the same thing after 8 beers, cuz he's "more careful". But hey, man - I'm not preaching, believe me - I used to do the same shit - jeez, when I used to go to college about 3 hours from here, my buddy and I would spend the whole freakin' ride clouding up the interior of the car. I could never seem to keep my speed right, though - 70 MPH seemed HELLA FAST while I was baked! It's tough NOT to drive stoned when you spend 75% of your waking hours blazing up.

I don't do it anymore - in fact, I probably take a toke maybe once a year at most, and usually regret it. I dunno why, but for some reason I just stopped enjoying weed altogether. But I definitely had about an 8 to 10 year run where I was a certified pothead. It was fun while it lasted, but I enjoy my sobriety these days.

Yeah I hear ya man, I'm mean I don't condone it, or suggest it at all. You're right, probably not safer, but I mean its not like beer where you have a few and you feel invincible behind the wheel. I used to get plowed and drive, and I regret doing that. I never had any accidents luckily, but it was just damn stupid. I hated getting up in the morning and having to go look at my car just to make sure I didn't hit anything because I didn't remember driving home  But as for weed, if anything I get a little more aware, of what's going on. I don't get aggressive at all, usually when i drive sober I get road rage, and get all pissed off a shitty drivers. But when I'm baked, I don't care about anything except getting to where I'm going, and listening to music. I guess to each their own, you kinda just gotta be samrt and know your limitations.

hihoslva May-29th-2002 08:25 PM

Even though I don't really toke anymore, I'll always believe that weed in general is MUCH less harmful and debilitating than alcohol.

While driving on any substance is not really recommended, I'd much rather everyone on the road was baked rather than drunk. Being high doesn't affect your ability to stay in lane and make at least half-way decent decisions.

Besides, if EVERYONE on the roads was high, road rage would be all but elimintaed, and most people would probably drive the speed limit or under. The world might be a happier place.

Even "non-smokers" (well, sort of, anyway) want to see legal green, man. So many of the negative effects of alcohol just don't surface with weed. No one I ever knew got stoned, and thought they could beat up the 400 Lb bouncer at the club. Or beat up his woman. Or drove his car into a ditch. Or couldn't remember which house he lived in. Or wound up puking on someone's shoes ('cept for them BIG bong rips, but still - it's different - like taking a huge cigarette pull would make you choke and maybe puke). The list is endless.

Legalize and decriminalize.

This thread is cracking me up....thanks...I needed it today. I must admit I've sensed a strange smell a couple times in my P5..and I've only had it for about 3.5 weeks. I just thought I was trippin or something...but maybe I was actually not imagining the smell since a couple of you have smelt something strange too. It never stays around for long....probably due to having my windows down most of the time....but nonetheless it was there. I have the leather interior....any of you that smelt it have leather?
As for the other topic of discussion here.......jus too funny. I personally partake occasionally......usually just if hangin out wit friends at someone's house.......or to relax at bedtime.....but I'm too paranoid to drive while "under it's influence". Not only do I feel like I'm in slo-motion in that state......but I don't wanna chance getting pulled over by the po-po for something else...and having them smell that smell....and be assed out! I drove like that once......well....it was a combination of that, alcohol...and medication I was taking that I think made it affect me more. I will never do it again......feel lucky that I made it home that night...and without harming anyone else.
I do agree that it should be legalized though!

If it's a kind of skunky smell - that's what I'm smelling.. No leather here...

Same thing happens too. As soon as the windows go down it's gone, but sure enough, it's there after it's been sitting for a while again.

1fatEs May-30th-2002 03:01 AM

I dont have the new car smell and my car smells fine.......must be from all the burnouts:evilgrin:  :bigthumb: ...and for the getting high thing Sweedenhouse is right about how often do you hear about someone in a high speed chase....I remember getting so high I always drove 35mph on the freeway:D :D and used my blinkers if i was going around a corner in a parking lot:D
