Installing aftermarket HU with Mazda pocket

Hi Guys,

I've got a new HU and the Mazda din pocket. Aside from the wiring is this all I need?

I've done a test fit and it is ok, it doesn't seem overly stable and there are a couple of gaps I'm not terribly pleased with.

Does anyone have any tips for installing a new HU with a Mazda pocket in a P5? Is there anyway to use the mounting brackets from the stock HU? Should I also use a kit?

Thanks in advance!

Jay

use the metal pocket with the after market HU. also, put electrical tape on the edge of the metal basket between the HU and the pocket. if there is a gap, you can see the metal. so covering it with a strip of electrical tape makes it look a lot better;) also, if it doesn't fit perfect, a little bit of foam insulation strips can help. put it on the pocket between it and the HU. i don't know how the factory pockets fit, but with other pockets, the padding is almost always needed. but all you really need is the HU, pocket, and wiring harness.
Thanks, that's what I suspected but wasn't sure. Local installers weren't a lot of help, they originally sold me a single din ford kit.

best buy and circuit city tell people with new pro's to take it somewhere else:rolleyes: how hard is it to install a pocket? lazy bastards:D and i know they can get the pockets. the brands they carry have them. but you should be set. check the fit of the pocket and HU together. that will determine if you need the foam insulation.
I've already checked the fit. Side to side there are no gaps, but top and bottom there is a bit.

You say foam insulation, maybe I'm sleepy but what exactly do you mean (what is a common use for it)? Where do you put the insulation? Between the HU and the pocket?

Example: (excuse my uber asci skills)

-top-
<HU>
<foam insulation>
<POCKET>
-bottom-

Don't want to be a pain, but I've got very little experience installing a din HU. All the information I've got from here and around the net seems to assume you know exactly what to do with the din cage that comes with the deck.

Again thanks for the help.

you can get the insulation at a hardware store. weather stripping is what it's called. a roll is like $2. it's designed to go at the bottom of windows, to seal them better. it's black insulation. just tell them you need some foam strip insulation. you'll have to guess the thickness you need. remember, if you get too thin, you can add another strip. if you get too thick, you're S.O.L. yeah, put it between the HU and pocket. your diagram is what is needed. the insulation has a sticky side. put the sticky side on the pocket. and with the metal basket, bend as many tabs down as you can. it will help to make the HU more secure.
You kick ass. I used a whole bunch of the weather strip, and some black tape. Now everything is in there REALLY secure, not rattles or squeeks!

The other thing I did was to take the rubber peg off the stock HU, modify it a little to fit my new HU. This gives the new HU a lot of support from behind. I should have taken pictures of the procedure...well I am going to be changing the pocket out in the near future, so I'll take pictures of everything then.

Thanks for your help!

Jay
