is it a harness? that i need to get to attach the wires for my stereo to a new HU? and if so are those available for all kinds of models?

I keep the original harness and tap the wires to my new HU so if i want to sell the car and keep my HU, it will be easy for me to put the original HU back in the car.

I recommend it because the wire harness that snaps in to the factory wire harness is clearly labeled what wires go to what and most of the time the color corresponds to the new head unit. You should have a diagram on the new headunit or it may be in the owner's manual. That way you can just unplug it (the new unit) and plug the factory one back in if you decide to sell or trade your car in.
