So, I'm lookin' for stone guards for the fog lamps - both for looks and for practicality - I drive my p5 A LOT - 13k miles in 5 months, and I already had Safelite fix a damn stone crack in the windshield.

Anyone seen any? I've checked into other cars, like Subarus, etc - can't find any that fit.

Please don't steer me at any chrome crap either. They'll need to be black or be paint-able to match the car.

Any chance Mazda's gonna make 'em?

Also, anyone know how to re-wire the fogs so they can be turned on independent of the headlights? I'd love to leave 'em on all the time, and see if they're bright enough alone at night.

 

If they are bright enough at night, it won't be any use still. They aren't angled properly as fog lights are meant to shine on the ground so you can see what's nearby better in the fog. It also makes others facing you see you better. You're supposed to drive slow in the fog anyhow, so distance isn't as important.

Besides, your daytime running lights will be on unless your e-brake is up =)

Also be careful to not make them totally independent, as some people forget to turn off their fogs when they shutoff their car. Or wire it to trigger the warning tone if possible.
I've never tried.

Is that true for all states? Or do some states require daytime running lights?

 

Yeah, I also had to replace a fog light because of a cracked lens.

My Mazda dealersh told me that the lens is glued to the rest of
the assembly, and they can't replace just the glass. My inspection
of the broken lamp seems to confirm this.

The problem is that replacing the whole assembly is around US$150.

I looked around for aftermarket lamps from PIAA and Hella, and it
doesn't seem like they've got anything that will fit in the P5's hole.

I also looked for metal or plastic cages that could be put over the
lamps to prevent future damage, and I didn't really find anything.

For now, my way of preventing fog lamp damage is to limit my
freeway driving, since I'm pretty sure it was a stone on the
freeway that caused the problem.

So if anybody finds a better solution, please let me know.
