Extreme Rattling issue Anyone had this prob?
So my system is up and running now, I have 2 JL Audio 10W7's with each one being run off their own 500/1. I am now tracking down and getting rid of all the rattles in my car (2002 MP5).
I have started to dynamat everything, I took the spoiler off the car and dynamated the entire thing. So I have no spoiler rattles anymore. But I do have an interesting rattle I need to get rid of. Maybe some of you have had it before???
Along the rear bumper along either side of the car there is a nasty rattle. It almost sounds like air being forced out of a seam on either side of the car. I am posting this to see if anyone has encountered this before and if so were you able to stop it.
Otherwise, next weekend the entire bumper comes off the car and I go hunting for rattles.

Hey, I am running 2 JL Audio 10w3's in my 2000 sedan and I had that problem also. I checked it out and the reason why it is doing it is b/c the rear quarter panel isn't tight enough to the rest of the body. I still haven't fixed it, as I don't know what do to. But if this helps in any way, then good luck.
When I had 3 12inch Jl w3's in my sedan they bumper acually started to become loose in that area from the bass.
So i Downgraded to 2 12inch kicker compvr's , there isnt really much to do as he said cause the panel isnt securely fastened to the vehicle.
The bass is getting forced out through that area.
Maybe try securing that panel with glue or something???

If you remove the trim inside the trunk you'll find that there are vents at the rear sides of the trunk that exit behind the bumper cover. If you're displacing a good amount of air, you may be forcing it out through these vents, which could be the cause of the rattle you're hearing. I don't know how to stop it, but I would suggest doing some experiments with these vents to see if that is the cause.

Just a suggest- try tubing the vents (I have not looked at them personally yet) build a tube to go though the vent, or try changing the size of the openings a little. In speakerbox design bad harmonics happen, but can be fixed sometimes by modifiying the lenght or size of the port. Basically this is an issue of ports, no on the box per se, but on the car itself. If it won't kill the car, consider sealing it up, or building one way flaps (in I would suppose).
If you seal it, do keep in mind that the noise is coming from overpressue, volumes of air trying to find a home. Seal the hole the pressue will still need to move somewhere. I have a friend David Baldwin, Toys with Noise, that cracks to windsheild of his competition Surburban at will with the subs anymore. Crowds love it at competition, but for a user car, have to replace windows all the time just might suck a bit!

Hey, If you lay under your car and look up in front of your bumper, there should be some trim screws and above that some heavy duty nuts that attach to the quarter panel. If this does not work try dynomatting and using thick insulating carpet through the whole trunk to eliminate air passure through the trunk, and remember, if you have ports, leave a place for the air to vent, if you have it blowing in a blocked space, if that certian space has rattleable items eg.layered metal...it will rattle like hell. Also try looking at your trunk, the backing where your licence plate goes rattles like a bastard.
I took out my rear speaker deck and removed the speakers from it and took out the stock grilles. After I did that I used that twill automotive carpet that you buy for 9.99 a roll for at your local autoparts store and recarpeted it. After that, I taped and insulated the trunk strut bars. They rattle together alot, now my rockford sub sounds awesome, except for the trunk rattling where the licence plate is....(from the inside). Try removing those vents that are in the rear deck and also carpet the whole thing from front to back..that should eliminate the rattle.
I use to hae a rattle in the back of my p5. It had to do with the rear side casings where the pump was on the right and the same are on the opposite side. I stripped everything out (pump etc.) and it still rattled. What I did was sprayed the inside of my rear fixtures with a thin sealing agent, then once I put them back on I sprayed the area where the plastic meets the frame with an invisble sealing solvent...
Problem solved!!!
