BOSS Audio Products?

Hey- I went into a local stereo shop today, trying to get a CD Player, the salesmen was trying to sell me a unit made by BOSS, I've never heard of them, has anyone??

pimpprotege69 February-23rd-2003 07:24 PM

Yuck

mazdaspeedwest February-23rd-2003 07:34 PM

Don't waste your time with BOSS.

Hawaiian- how ya doin? :D

Boss is not a top teir manufacturer, it is a faceplate number- manufactured in China or Korea, and sold to several companies who rebrand it as thier very own. It is not as uncommon as you might imagine, the stock 6 disc in the protege is built using Nakamichis patented technologies.

onehawaiian February-23rd-2003 07:57 PM

i'm still surving dude. how's the club going? ever get those flat blaus?

Dave Cameron February-23rd-2003 08:00 PM

Ha- yes those are still in the box in the shop, I have heard some not so kind thinks about them from a friend, but I will play with them some day.
Too damn cold here right now- snow and 15 degrees!
Run your toes through the sand for me!
Dave:cool:

Then be prepaired to spend no less then $280. Other then lacking power the stock unit is as good if not better then most aftermarket units up untill this point.

Dave Cameron February-25th-2003 03:53 PM

You know- I saw a new in the box Premier 650 CD unit on E-Bay this morning for right at 200.00 dollars, and it is above plain jane a notch or two.
add shipping, it might end up 230.00 for the unit, then you will need install, and a second pocket of somekind. :p

wesleeptheylive March-8th-2003 10:44 PM

I can't even believe that s*it. I guess that a sucker is born every day.

Also, The stock HU in a P5(not sure about other Pro's) is made by none other that Nakamichi(sp?), one of the very best.

1st MP3 in NH March-13th-2003 10:56 PM

Whats wrong with Kingwood, I heard they are every bit as good as Kenfer?

demoninvictus March-15th-2003 03:39 AM

what about JDL? anybody know of any knock off of a knock off? like a company that wanted to one up the idiots who got Kingwood off of Kenwood, and name themselves Kendud, or Kantwood? ha, never knew that a faucet company (kohler) made subs and amplifiers

UCSBgeek March-15th-2003 04:33 AM

HAHAHAHAHA I never had seen these knockoffs...KINGWOOD, JDL, Kuntwood?

P.S.... here's a little quote I remember about Bose:

No highs,
no lows,
that's Bose!

JFanaselle March-15th-2003 10:48 PM

anyone ever heard of JBC? That's just as bad of a knockoff, but then to cover it up, the jbc stands for "Just Be Cool". That's some funny shit!

wesleeptheylive March-17th-2003 09:27 PM

just installed the boss 6.5's but i didn't have time to install the front blaukpunts i got...but i don't see why people bash these speakers without giving them a hear....So many people on this board are so quick to jump on the bandwagon and not think for themselves....i'm not saying they are the best speakers in the world but they are a great improovement over stock....good high's but i'm sure they'll sound better once i install the front speakers and the kenwood hu. 1

JFanaselle March-18th-2003 01:46 PM

the money that you spent on those could have been applied toward a better pair. Trust me, when those don't sound great anymore due to inferior materials, or when you get used to the sound and you hear a better pair that you want to buy, you'll regret having purchased them.

wesleeptheylive March-21st-2003 05:27 PM

That might be the case but like i said before i'm not saying these are the best speakers but the way people bash them on the forum it would seem like the stock speakers are better. Why don't u humor the subject for me.....Here are the boss Neo622 specs...
Impedance 4 ohms
Power Handling 350 Watts
Magnet High Density Neodymium
Frequency Responce 65-20 Khz
Cone Metallic injection
tweeter 1" titanium dome

cost 36$

I'm not trying to argue with you at all you said i could've gotten something way better for the price i got them for so i would like to be educated

By the way these are 2-way 6.5 speakers for the rear deck of my 2002 Es Sedan....

JFanaselle March-21st-2003 11:42 PM

I'm never one to bash, but I'm just saying that you shouldn't have gotten them. First of all, you say the power handling is 350 watts. That's obviously a max power rating. This means that the kingwood corporation was able to push 350 watts into them for .000001 seconds before they caught on fire. You need to look at continous (or RMS) power handling. If they don't have an RMS rating, then that supports my fact that you shouldn't buy them. An RMS rating of at least 40 watts will be decent. Secondly, there are many other factors that determine how well a speaker will sound and how long it will last. To name a few: The layers of copper in the voice coil, the winding of the coil- edge wound (flat wire) or traditional wound (rounded wire), the material used for the voice coil former - in this case probably paper or cardboard as opposed to plastic or metal, the sensetivity of the speaker (rated in dB), the cone material's ability to be light and move fast but not compromise or change shape during play, the surround material's ability to remain strong and prevent shifting of the cone but not be so heavy and stiff that it prevents free movement of the cone, the size of the magnet (in ounces), and so on and so on. Anyone in the car stereo industry will tell you not to buy inferior products, no matter how good of a deal you get (and that's why I'm telling you this). If you came into my shop, I'd love you, because you're one of the guys who spends $36 on speakers that the shop pays $10 for, and we make 300% profit margin on it. I'm not trying to be rude or be a dick or anything, I'm just trying to tell you why purchasing speakers like those isn't a great idea. For around $40 or $50, you could have gone to best buy or pretty much any retailer to pick up a set of 2 way pioneer's or kenwoods or sonys that would put those kingwoods to shame.

Oh and by the way, stock speakers typically cost the manufacturer anywhere between $.75 and $4 to make, so they are an improvement over the stockers.;)

wesleeptheylive March-22nd-2003 10:38 AM

Well you definately know what your talking about, care to recommend a better pair of rear 6.5 components?around $50 tops?

pantherES March-22nd-2003 10:51 AM

He did recommend a better pair.

wesleeptheylive March-22nd-2003 11:04 AM

I actually was asking if he recommended a certain Kenwood or Sony. But to get back to my argument, These speakers are 175 RMS,(you said 40 is decent) So i would take it these are decent. SPL 1 Watt/1 meter: 94 dB (How does the DB hold up against other Makers such as kenwood,sony....etc).But anywayz the Voice Coil for these speakers is 1" aluminum.(Not Paper or Cardboard Like you Said) What do better speakers use? You keep on saying inferior materials but give me an example. (I've looked up Kenwood speakers and they also use aluminum voice coils.)Here are a description of the materials for this speaker: Chrome plated basket - Butyl rubber surround - Metal grilles - Ferro fluid enhancedTHESE RIPPER MODELS USE NEODYMIUM, A SUPERIOR COMPOUND WITH HIGH MAGNETIC FLUX DENSITY, TO CREATE A THIN MAGNET STRUCTURE WITH THE PERFORMANCE OF A CONVENTIONAL, DEEP B.
But anywayz just for the curious here are pics of the boss speakers
http://www.protegetuner.com/boss1.jpg
http://www.protegetuner.com/boss2.jpg
And just for shits and giggles here's a pic of the stock speaker

http://www.protegetuner.com/stockrearspeakr.jpg

pantherES March-22nd-2003 11:29 AM

First let me say, I am no expert in Car Audio. I know what I know but, I still ask questions.

That magnets on those speakers are tiny. The magnet on my Infinity 5 1/4's are bigger than those. To see what I mean, go to EBay and search the 6 1/2" speakers and look for pictures. I highly doubt those speakers will be able to create deep bass.

Just my opinion.

wesleeptheylive March-22nd-2003 11:34 AM

Now that i'm doing the research (I bought the speakers on impulse) Every Kenwood and Sony 6.5" components i see is inferior to these(Best i found was 70watts RMS) Made with the same materials as this Boss. Just because a company doesn't make good everything( For Example A Boss Amp someone stated before that sucked ass) Does not justify stereotyping Boss Products. As far as I know (Someone proove me wrong here) These speakers are better and cost me less than some more expensive and inferior Kenwood and Sony Namebrand Speakers. If you wanna resort to "You get what you pay for", Most of the times when buying a Namebrand Product the Price of advertising( What makes them a reputable namebrand)Is reflected in the cost of a product. So in other words if boss and Kenwood were to make the same exact speaker which one do you think would be more expensive? 1

pantherES March-22nd-2003 11:43 AM

On second thought, you are right. BOSS does make top of the line components. You really should stop telling people about it though. The last thing we need is this stuff getting out to the general public and then the prices of BOSS speakers would jump from $30/pair to industry average levels of $120/pair. WE DO NOT WANT THAT. Let's try to keep the prices low so only we can enjoy the best at these low, low, low prices.

I'll be picking some up this afternoon.

wesleeptheylive March-22nd-2003 11:57 AM

A simple comment from a simple man. I'm not proclaiming victory for these speakers, I'm trying to debate with people educated in these matters, people like JFanaselle, people that are mature and know how to carry a conversation, (Unlike ignorant people like you that waste space on the page with Posts that bring no information to the topic....Just ignornance )This little "Debate" us grownups are having about Boss Speakers is intented for information for people who frequent this forum. If someone says to me,those speakers suck, for $20 more you could have gotten a better pair, bet, If they really are inferior thank you for the info i'll look into it. But if you tell me, Oh all Boss Products are crap don't waste your money, (Based on sterotype and not information)THAT IS INGORANCE, AND PEOPLE DO NOT FREQUENT THIS FORUM FOR IGNORANCE SIR, THEY COME HERE TO LEARN.) If someone shows me right now that These Boss speakers are inferior and sweat shop status, than fine i would've shut the fuck up a long time ago, but that is not the case. Go head Panther Es speak on it(Hows that new Ass Hole feel?:mach: ).And next time you have something to say that benefits noone on this forum but yourself do yourself a favor and keep your mouth closed when grown folk talk. Sorry for the flames but it's people like you on this forum that take us backwards, not forwards in trying to learn and trade information on our Proteges.(You have no information so you decide to be sarcastic)1

pantherES March-22nd-2003 12:05 PM

First of all, You sound as if you have no idea what decent speakers sound like. I had a friend who would go to K-mart and buy speakers that they had on display because the specs were the same as the brand name speakers. THEY ARE NOT THE SAME. I tried to tell you that they magnet on those speakers were small but you came back with the "now that i'm doing the research" bit. If you do any research, meaning going to anywere that you can listen to decent speakers you would know that the speakers you bought are crap! There is no debate about BOSS speakers. If they were any good, the wouldn't be $30. Simple. If the Protege was built to BMW standards, it wouldn't be a $18,000 car would it?

As far as the rest of your last post, it speaks largely who is mature! I will not go there. Think what you want.

wesleeptheylive March-22nd-2003 12:19 PM

JFanaselle March-22nd-2003 02:03 PM

wowzers....I didn't think this argument would get this big. I can say from looking at those speakers, they are definately the best boss audio product I've ever seen. In re-considering the facts, you probably didn't get too bad of a deal on them. They will suffice as a rear pair for sure. I don't even belive in rear speakers (throws off my imaging), just a ton of front ones. But there are a few pieces I noted about the picture that suprised me...for one, they used a suspended tweeter design as opposed to running a pole through the center of the woofer cone. This is typically a feature reserved for expensive speakers. Do they have a seperate input for the tweeter on the back of the speaker, or do the woofer and the tweeter share a common one. One other thing, if boss rated those things at 175 watts RMS, don't for one second believe that. They in reality probably can't handle more than 50 or so RMS without causing damage. If you feed them 175, they'll definately start sounding horrible in a matter of hours.

demoninvictus March-23rd-2003 05:09 AM

Down boy, down!! now i'm not being an asshole, and neither is anyone else NOR INTENDS to be. i'm not ignorant, and i'm not a jerk... simple cut. NOW, just because a speaker says it needs a certain level of watts RMS doesn't mean jack shit, cause if you're running off a head unit, you're not going to get ANYWHERE near RMS wattage for your boss speakers. now, even if you amp them, which would be the only exception, you might not see 'great' sound, but decent sound to your ears. BOSS isn't a popular brand anybody on here would recommend for 2 reasons, 1) people rarely win SQ competitions on 'cheap' brands, such as BOSS, if they did, you would see people recommend them. 2) BOSS follows a similar style of engineering and advertising as 'knock off' brands, such as JDL, Rockwood USA, etc. ...something you would have to spend LESS than 100 bucks on regular price for a pair of components for. you WILL get what you pay for. you asked for an opionion, you got one and to top it off, you didn't like it and flipped out.. so there for my friend, YOU ARE THE ASSHOLE! :) I ran a single Pioneer in my car, just to give it a test, just to see how much wattage it was actually capable of. it was rated at 140 Peak, 45 to 110 RMS. I ran the speakers with highs only for about 2 minutes with 50 watts of power... no problem, distorted a bit after half volume... ie, not ideal speaker for me. 100 watts... granted, still under MAX RMS rating... the speaker didn't last more than 20 seconds... infact, went up in smoke right afterwards. NOW, 175 watts rms you said? you'll never put NEARLY 175 watts to that speaker, NEVER... and if you do, it's not going to be longer than a minute. cause as i've seen, even retail brands such as pioneer (fuck sony altogether, just fuckin forget sony) are shit and falsely advertised. like he said, 375 watts at what? .000001 seconds? oh, and your small magnets... neodynium? it's an design engineered to have the same sound as a conventional speaker, at half or less the size of a conventional magnet. these magnets are not as strong, don't hit as hard.. so if you're buying components with these neodynium magnets, it's not gonna sound all that good if the engineering isn't that great... and by the most common opinioin available by MANY professional audio experts, BOSS isn't one of those companies. YOU DON'T GO TO WALMART TO BUILD A SOUND SYSTEM THAT WILL WILL PRAISE FROM YOUR FELLOW AUDIO HEADS, COMPETITIONS, OR RESPECT. thats how it simply cuts out, you're going to get what you pay for. i have pioneers in the front of my car, they aren't the BEST sounding, but with cross overs, it's perfect for me. my subs, rockford fosgate punch z's, they pound like hell, but they only sound what i paid for them, i know and i've seen the sound my system is capable of when i went out and bought a pair of alpine e10's... some of the best subs for the money i have personally tested. my rear speakers, bostons that retail for $175 dollars.. they're worth every cent i paid for them ($75 off of a friend who never used them) :). i just bought some kenwood components off of here and was absolutely displeased with them.... so you see, it's all a matter of opinion. IF someone on here were to read that i thought Alpine E10's were some of the best subs i've ever heard in my car, they would probably say, well, "wait till you try eclipse subs, or JL subs, or infinity kappa's or something" now, i leave you with this, you wanted an opinion and you got it. now, if someone asks you what YOU think of BOSS speakers, tell them something good... stand up for brand that is not so well known, give them props, but you won't see me giving BOSS any respect ANY time soon, simple as that, MHO. like it, great, don't like it, FUCK you :)
peace out

JFanaselle March-23rd-2003 06:36 AM

I think it's funny that everyone has to bash my company (sony) without any concrete evedince of inferior products. In fact, our products are the best out there for the price, and thats why sony always has the best sales every year in every category (amps, subs, speakers, head units, etc) If you can give me a few good reasons why sony is crap (without the usual 'my friend had some xplod's and they sounded bad' or 'they blew out in a week') and we'll have a civilized debate.

wesleeptheylive March-23rd-2003 10:46 AM

demonvictus, i respect your opinion and take what you said as good information....but i didn't flip when panther es gave me an opinion..when he gave me his opinion (about the small magents) i respected that because it was valid input, but then he came out of his face in his next post with the sarcastic "Yeah Your RIght Let's All Go By Boss Products cuz there so good" Then i had to say something and to be honest with you guys, i really prefer the "other" board because people on this board don't know how to debate. We debate to get information, it's not arguing. And you missed my point completely, I couldnt give a shit if my rear speakers push out 22rms or 9000rms I don't give a fuck about boss i'm not even an audiohead to be honest with you. I was simply debating the fact that many people on this board stereotype namebrands with no valid facts to back them up. I asked about boss speakers and most everyone told me they sucked just because they were Boss, and had no factual information. Panther Pointed out the smaller Magnet, but there are other factors involved besides the magnet. Demonvictus did break it down though, using factual information, not just saying "Boss Sucks I wouldn't pay 5$ for them because they are a knock off brand" So lastly i would like to say when asked information about a product let's use facts and help eachother make informed decisions instead of just saying Don't ever buy X Brand Because they make horrible speakers(And then Show no Proof What So ever) 1
