Question Rear Brakes Worn Already?!

My 2001 Protege ES 2.0 has worn out rear brake pads in just 18 months (OK, 40k miles also) even though the front pads are still fine. I've never seen rear pads wear faster than front pads. Also, the drivers side pads are gone whereas the passenger side still have plenty of pad left.
Have any of you seen this? Is this a trend/mfg. defect?
Thanks for any info!
Jim

No ABS on my car

Yeah, I know. Just wondered if Mazda was experiencing a large issue with this car...no one has replacement rotors except the dealer, which may indicate that they are swallowing all the available inventory and not allowing any to flow to parts stores.
Thanks again.

rear pads

EBD only came w/ Premium package. If the rear pads are worn, it is most likely the car was driven with the park brake on and one side of the cable is slightly tighter than the other. One other possibility is that the proportioning valve is not functioning correctly. I'm not sure if this could happen without a noticeable change in braking performance though. Maybe an auto would be better, and just don't use the park brake (like most of us silly Americans).

Wink

But, then I couldn't perform those neat hand brake turns I learned while Pro-rallying!
