Eibach springs

i have eibach springs pro kit in a box and sitting around. i want to put it on my p5. places are asking for $350, $410, and $550, JUST TO INSTALL THE EIBACH SPRINGS and alightments. ain't that expensive? i bought mine for $250 and i am broken... also, i'm concerned that eibach springs might be hurt the suspension in my car, and i was thinking of getting Eibach struts or something to support the car to be more firm... what do you guys think? i'm new to this and oh... i thought it'd be free if i install the eibach springs myself... along w/ buddies, of course... but i dont know what to do, how to get it in, and how to replace, or anything... i see under the hood, you can get under the suspension in the front bumper, but as i see the rear bumper, does it require jack up the car in the rear and go under there? help me out and give me your opinions on that eibach struts or suspension. thanks.

wow, foxymazda, I'm impressed. It took me a solid 6-7 hours to do my springs. I borrowed a spring compressor from Auto Zone. I wouldn't do the job without one. However, foxy's right that the back springs aren't compressed as much as the fronts. I actually could compress them myself.

BTW, my car pulled slightly to the left after alignment, but it doesn't do it now, after a few thousand miles.

spring compressor - i can rent them at auto zone? how much does it cost to borrow them? do they need my address and stuff? i really hope this will works, because i could get something else with 350, 410, 550 bucks, maybe pay bills or something, shessh...

It was a $41 deposit at Auto Zone for the compressors, which you obviously get back. However, I don't know if you sound like you're the type that should be doing this yourself. If you do, make sure you have some qualified help.

do it yourself with some help from your buddies. its not worth
paying anybody unless you absolutely dont want to do it yourself.

i did mine about 10 days ago and it took me about 5-6 hours
by myself and ordinary handtools and spring compressor.
i highly advise you to use a spring compressor as its not worth
risking injury or damage to your surroundings if it did pop out
while you undo the strut tops.

the passenger rear strut will require you to take off the
brake caliper because the lower bolts will not come off due
to the caliper being in the way.

hit my www to see a pict of my finished product. its not
hard to do, its just time consuming. the ride is very good,
no bounciness or looseness. next up is a tad stiffer rear
sway bar and that's about all this car needs for streeting around.

Just stand on the bottom of the strut and have your friend use the impact drive to remove the main nut. Watch out! the fronts really haul *** across the yard!

We just finished installing mine, what a bitch. On all 4 spots the nut where the struts were was so rusted it took forever to get them off, then had to use new ones putting it back on. Took 6 hours, and that was with help from 2 people that work at a shop, but between you and me they didn't know exactly what to do. Oh well, they are in and I am happy.

It doesn't take long if you have a buddy help. And by the way, before you start spray those bolts with WD-40 (I love that ****) and they will "magically" break loose easier. We did mine without a spring compressor. Just a floor jack and 2 jack stands. 2.5 hours tops. And you will want to get it aligned, or your tires will wear unevenly. If you drive your car a couple thousand miles, your tires will wear even to the pavement, which will make it drive "straighter" Also make sure the front two struts are turned the right way inside the springs before you attempt to put them back on. You will know what I mean when you try it.

You will need a 5mm (I think) Allen wrench to hold the endlink studs in place when loosening the nuts. Hint: if you are a cyclist, a regular bicycle wrench set includes the right size.

I concur with shackmgr6073 about the WD-40, although I've personally had better luck with Liquid Wrench Super Penetrant. I have heard of folks on this forum having LOTS of problems loosening the endlink nuts and the strut-to-knuckle bolts on cars that have been driven in areas where the roads are salted in the winter. Hint: Soak these nuts and bolts with Liquid Wrench or WD-40 AT LEAST one week before even starting the job. I've even done this 2 weeks ahead and repeated the treatment every 3-4 days. Be careful not to get any oil on the brakes; keep some brake cleaner handy in case you miss. And remember... a breaker bar is your friend.

I just had a shop put my Spool Springs on for $100. I thought was a decent deal since most other places were charging about $150-200 to install.

I strongly disagree. 5 - 6 hours of time is far more valuable than the $150 it cost me to get my springs installed and car aligned. Besides, when you get it done professionally, you can be relatively sure that it got done right. A professional can install your springs and do the complete alignment in less than 2 hours. Anyone quoting you $500+ has obviously never installed springs on a Protege or is trying to rip you off hard!

I had a spring compressor which madeit easier but to be honest you could probably use a c clamp or something else as long as its secure. The back springs didn't pop nearly as much as thr front ones did but its really important to have the springs compressed and have caution.
