What Cold-Air Intake do you have???
#76
UPDATE:
After all of the hassle and also the great input by Roddimus and others, I think I will put the OEM intake back on and sell this CAI. I was not impressed with it at all, after driving on the highway (100 miles+ round trip to work) today and up and down hills near my house. Things I don't like about the CAI:
1. LOSS OF LOW-END TORQUE
2. Noisy
3. Shifty transmission (remember, I have an automatic...seemed to shift an awful lot...jerky)
4. Area where the air filter is and the air filter was wet after a downstorm....a big concern.
Thus, my K&N filter is no longer for sale, but my CAI is...if anyone wants to make me an offer (Shipping will be extra). Seems that CAI's are not all they're cranked up to be....the regular intake with K&N filter seemed to be more my style and it is less of a headache for sure.

thats upsetting to hear. I also noticed a slight loss of torque down low even with my SRI but for some reason it really helped my topend. I went out to the drag strip and picked up .2s with no other mods done. Not trying to blow smoke or anything, just my personal experience.
I wouldn't worry about water if the filter is pointing down inside that well. It would require a SERIOUS puddle under full throttle to suck up any water.
can't you help you about the tranny. I've not heard anyone else having this problem.

might I suggest my intake mods to the stock system then, I've been VERY please thus far with it...especially with my heat shield...it was covered in the "Home made CAI thread"
did you try to reset your ECU?

Roddimus...upsetting for you? Yes, I understand...very upsetting to me too. I did reset my ECU, so that wasn't the issue. I think for the CAI to really be worth it, I need a manual tranny. I bought the auto (although I prefer the manual) due to my wife wanting to drive the Protege some times (and she really hates manual). I wish that the low end hadn't bottomed out as much as it has. There are tons of hills near where I am and I really appreciate the get-up-and-go when it comes to that. I can push the car with the CAI and it isn't impressive in this area, although it sounds pretty impressive. Anyway, back to the stock....I might try Race Beat's idea some time in the future....but not now.

My eBay CAI is off of my car now...with the extra parts that I had to buy to make it work, so it is "the full kit." I'm packaging it up now and willing to send it to someone who wants it. I'll take a loss on it as it's not fair to ask someone to pay full price for a "used" CAI.
Any takers?

the loss in bottom end is BARELY noticeable....at least it was on my car.
It has to do with the engines ability to "suck in" air throw a straw (intake).....just think about drinking a coke with a long thin straw and short fat straw....see how they feel different? Same physical principle

Then why isn't there a loss throughout the whole RPM range? Same "straw?"
The CAI that's being discussed looks FAR simpler than the OEM piece....less bends -- equal, if not larger diameter piping -- A filter with much more surface area -- much cooler air is being sucked in -- Elimination of the resonators.
Could it have to do with the acoustic tuning of the piping or something?
