Unreal

Wow, you guys are complaining about a slow car, when in fact all of you have ES models or the P5.

You can only imagine my disgust, 1.6 Liters of pure no power.

It's all relative. 100 whp is really not considered much by most standards today. It also doesn't help to have friend's who have RSX-S, EK CTR's (JDM Civic Type-R conversion) with 230 whp, brother with TL Type S, sister with Jetta 1.8 turbo, etc. I have to admit, I just recently drove a Toyota Echo & that thing is peppy. It's really got some "get up & go" in it for an econobox. And there's nothing wrong with only 1.6 liters, it's all in how efficient it is. My 1990 miata with a lot of engine work pumped out about 105 whp (more than my P5 ). My friend's Honda B16A with some minor mods puts down 140 whp.

okay so big frickin deal....there are a lot of cars out there that will out run us in a straight line race....

have them run you through the twisties and they won't be able to hang....I just wish i lived where the roads had more curves than straights....

and not to mention...regardless of how fast the OTHER guys are....our cars look bad *** just sitting still! and they draw looks where ever they go......not any other econo box that can do that that I know of.

I would consider the Protege more of a handling car myself. So what if I can't go fast in a straight line? Any idiot can drive fast in a straight line. It takes skill to work the turns.

230hp going to the wheels gives you an adrenaline rush every now and then I admit. But blasting out of it at almost the same speed you entered in, that's what I call fun.

uhhg, why is this always the response to cars with more power? When was the last time you got someone to race you in the twisties... besides the fact that its dangerous as hell, it hardly will ever occur on the street and someone with far less handling that knows how to drive his/her car can be a tough match. I'm sorry if I'm coming off as a jerk, I just think its a poor comeback for being slower.

I love our MP5, its the perfect size for our needs, I totally agree that it looks great, and I was surprised to find it handles as well as my prelude, but its still missing about 30-40hp to be the perfect car for my needs (and a shorter firmer shifter would be nice) Those things can (and will) be fixed, but out of the box, those are my only real complaints about the car.

The D16Y and the D16Z are both SOHC and have VTEC. The D15B is a 1.5 with VTEC-E.

Not to flame anybody by any means but I have to agree with this. Go to the Focus forum where the SVT is obviously slower than it's competitors but handles better (both of which are facts) & you hear the same thing pop up ALL THE TIME. I, for one, am very heavily biased towards handling than power, I used to drive a Miata for crying out loud. But still, power is important. When I drive my parent's brand new 1.7EL I don't find that much of a deficit in handling compared to my P5. It handles flatter & I can take corners practically as fast as my P5. It's quite balanced too, not a lot of push. The steering doesn't "feel" nearly as good as the P5 though. Back to the power issue, the Protege's are obviously underpowered, especially given it's good handling & chassis dynamics, another few hp won't hurt anything except for the wallet. For the price, I would have to say that it's one of my top picks given practicallity, build quality, performance, etc. Doesn't change the fact that it's still underpowered though, in my books at least. But again, it's all relative.
