thread size
I want to know the thread size for the shifter. It is kind of a dumb question but I would like some help if anypne knows the answer. Much thanks.

What are you trying to do? Most aftermarket shift knobs come with a blank nylon insert that will thread itself when you screw it on.

And any shift knob for a Miata will work - just for reference. If you find out what the thread pattern on the MIata is, you've got the Protege figured out, too.

It's a metric size and I am not sure how they really rate the pitch, but when I threaded my stick after removing the extention I found a die that matched the extention at Sears. It's 10mm x 25. (also the die is stamped 1-25). I assume the 1 is for 10 mm or 1 cm.

The actual thread size is 10mm X 1.25 I know this for a fact as I took my shifter and measured it with a thread pitch guage, and supplied the maker of my custom shift knob with that size...and it fits perfectly. Silver, the die you purchased is stamped 1-25 which is the pitch of the thread, 1.25. This means that there are 1.25 threads PER mm. The diameter of the thread is 10 mm. this is true for all 3rd Gen Proteges EXCEPT the MP3 which has a different pitch. not sure what it is...bit I KNOW its different. |
