In answer to your question about how I modified my stock air intake system, check out the following two threads. I think you've already seen the second one.

I've been spoiled, and it's pretty dangerous when you consider anything under 110 to be "not as fast as before..."

I feel the same way too. I have friends and family with ridiculously fast cars and after driving them my car feels SOOOOOO slow. I love my car, but completely despise the engine.

I do too... 1.6L is just not enough. The car is pretty responsive, and it handles great, but it´s just not fast enough... and low end torque is just too lacking.

But I would not hesitate for a minute to buy another Protege
(Just not the 1.6L or 1.8L)

why not the 1.8? The 2.0 has a whopping 8 hp more than the 1.8....nothing to fret about. It does have more tourqe though.

Im actually happy with the perfromance of my 1.8, 5 speed, and Im used to driving a 300 HP car.

Is your 1.6 an auto?

I didn´t know the 1.8L had only 8hp less than the 2.0L. I guess I could buy a 1.8L and then just put a CAI and take out the second cat to get some of those 8hp back.

I have a 1.6L 5sp manual with the second cat removed. I love the handling. I used to have a Honda Civic, and would not go back to the Honda for anything. Over here they are much more expensive and then don´t handle as well as my 323.

Man, how I hate my engine. I LOVE to drive my friends Civic. He has a lot done to it and its pretty quick. In his car, I can peel out strong in first and second, and sometimes it chirps in third. This is one Civic I do like.

The coldest temperature I've driven in so far is about 20 degrees F and there have been no problems so far with noise from the VTCS on start-up. Has Mazda provided a fix for this problem?
Well in my experiences with the VTCS cold engine startuup rattle happens when its colder than 20degrees F. It happens when it is butt *** cold, like in the morning when its 10 degrees F, here in Minnesota. Its freakin anoying as hell too, and I'm pissed because it seems like the VTCS problem is only with the 2001-2002 Gen 3 models (AND MINE"S A 2002 ES 3000mi!!!!) Booo, as of now, it doesn't seem like mazda wants to fix it.

Displacement is displacement... i would rather have a 2.0L and mod that engine and have higher hp and more displacement than have a 1.8L. I would think that a 2.0L would be able to get more power than a 1.8L by the laws of physics, top speed... blah blah... but then again it's a different engine design too so who knows...
