Squick from wheels when cold

Unhappy Squick from weels when cold

I got this high pich comming from the rear weels it seems for the very first 100 to 200 meters I drive my car. Where is it comming from, and why? it soungs like this: (eeeeeeeh eeeeeeeh eeeeeeh eeeeeeeh)

Also, it is not my e-breake because I can feel the car rol forward or backwards when the e-break is not on, so therefore the e-break isn't it. It's not the main breakes either. What could it be? Please help, the car is 5 months old, its a P5, 5-Speed.

I had the same problem and I got it checked out. The verdict was a manufacturing defect in the right rear rotor (could be in any), that caused friction and accentuated a squeak when the car was cold. I noticed it never made the sound when it was nice and warm outside.

In any case if this happens frequently and more than once a day, I would be quick to dismiss this as just being rust on the rotors (it happens and does cause a squeak until you break), and I would get a mechanic to inspect the rotor surface for defects. Good luck!

thanks for the quick and good reply. It happened today every time I moved from store to store by car. And this happens only when it's colder outside. I'll have it checked out.

It happens on mine too but I learn to accept this fact.
It's -10 outside and if a car is sitting outdoor for an extended period, I'd give it a break and think this is normal if the squeak isn't consistent...

Guys, get a life. These are machines, just like your computer... Try put any other machines outdoor for a couple hours and see

Thanks stocker for the English lesson that was definetly the point of this post. If you have nothing to say than shut up and keep breathing the clean Hamilton air.

As for the previous post, warped rotors are NOT caused by -10 degree temperatures. Most cars do NOT squeak in T.O weather conditions (well maybe this week). Regardless for any machine which is more expensive than 20k you should question things such as noise. Nowadays it's not acceptable to own a brand new car that makes more noise than a TTC bus.

I occasionally have the same problem with my car when it starts to get cold (-20°C and lower). The thing about it is it happens mainly when I am backing up, and only initially. If i drive for a couple hundred meters it will disappear.

Are you guys saying anything in regards to warranty work? I should give my Mazda dealer a dingle on the telefono. It's a good thing my roomate has a Spec V, it makes all of my warranty work look like peanuts (I think they have a parking spot for him at his dealer.). Hell, my other roomate's Dodge Omni is the most reliable of all three, she is a smart one for picking that baby up (rolling on 13's).

Hi,

I've read somewhere (maybe from the Protege owner's manual?) that you should just use transmission to park (shift 1 on manual) and not use the emergency brake in cold weather, because the disks may stick to the rotors. After driving through rain and the next day, I felt the sticking brake only for a while, when the car was still a few weeks old (but no squeak, though), probably because the brakes were still breaking in at that time. But I usually don't use emergency brake, especially when I go up north to the colder weather area.

The manual (or something else) also states not to do hard braking while it's braking in, so that it won't worn out unevenly, I guess. Is your car new? Or, it might just be a faulty, warped rotor.

I hope your warranty will cover it to fix the problem.

yes the car is new (5 months old, 7500 KM) I live in Vancouver, at night, the temperature is about 0 deg. Celsius. and I do use the hand breake every time I park the car. Also, I did do extreme hard breaking but the 'squeak' only started happening once it got colder outside. and it does go away after 100-200 meters in which distence I obiusly use the regular breakes, which at first 'squeak' as well.

I will try to park the car without using the hand breake, maybe its that that caused it all. Later all, and thanks for helping out.

Hi,

I was just flipping through pages of the Protege5 owner's manual, and would like to confirm what it says in it regarding the use of parking brake in freezing weather.
It's in the 'Driving Tips' section page 4-8 'Winter Driving', if the Canadian manuals are the same as US.

So, yes, try not to use the hand brake and see what happens.
