Protege5 comparo & top speed

Hey, Folks-

Thought you would like to read the original comparison test that Car and Driver did using the Protege5. It whipped its competition in the comparo, including the Aerio, Vibe, Matrix, Focus, and PT Cruiser.

http://www.caranddriver.com/article....&page_number=1

Sadly, as I've long suspected, the top speed (in stock condition) was found to be 113mph. Using my mph guide that I did in Excel (and adjusting tire diameter smaller by 1.7mm to dial out the error margin to match my real-world data), I came up with a top speed of 116.6, if the car could pull 5500 rpm in top gear. If enough mods were done to defeat the wind up to 6,000rpm, the car would pull 127. But anybody who claims to have done that in a stock car is full of shit. I have no idea where mine would come in, as I've never had it past 100 clicks. Probably never will.

I have had my pro5 speedo topped past 140mph. Before I had mods 135mph. Never governed. If anyone wants to call bullsh!t i will do it again and post video/photo.

is your speedo accurate?

....6,600rpm in top gear?! That's 140mph...

Okay, I guess you'll have to prove me wrong!

I think someone is either keeping secrets here or bs'ing us.....

You posted a pic of your car in another thread and it was an s-wagon, not a P5, now your saying you can do 140 ??? I smell something, sniff-sniff :bs:

QWKSILVR02 May-27th-2005 03:50 PM

Alright guys give me a couple days, are all of you governed? I didnt check rpms at 140+ but I do know it was high. Ill get it over 130 no problem on my way out this weekend, Ill post whatever I get.

macdaddyslomo May-27th-2005 03:58 PM

what mods you have ??? it's not governed but drag limited, so more power is needed to get that kind of speed

QWKSILVR02 May-27th-2005 04:08 PM

header, full 2.5" exhust, intake, cams. Thats pretty much it performance wise. I questioned it too then I just pushed and pushed the mph, getting higher and more ballsy each time. Then I had an open road with a focus next to me (tops at 109) and laid into it. Hit 140+ a couple. Ill see what I can do for you guys this weekend....

...this sounds like a physics problem waiting to happen....

Force to overcome aerodynamic drag = (.5)(air density) x (frontal area) x (velocity)^2

...I am going home before you guys make me do math again... but I would be willing to bet that the numbers say it isn't possible.

I never want to deal with mathematical equations like that ever again in my life ... It's amazing that you actually know somethin like that off the top of your head and USE IT!

And what if it is possible juddz? (which it is) Then what?

Thats just it, your going to hit it. Your speedo is off. your little car don't have the stuff to do it. You can video all you want, all it will show it how bad your speedo is off. If you really REALLY want to prove it get some one with a Z28 corvet hell a new mustang, to run with you with the video showing you holding up with him. I bet you don't make it past 120. Make sure the vid goes from his speedo to your car slow and steady so we don't think it was messed with.

Or you can just admit your lying and not put your self in dange.

QWKSILVR02 May-27th-2005 07:15 PM

What is everyones problem here, why would I lie about this? My speedo isnt off, since ive past cops and got pulled over for doing the speed I pasted them at. Hughes how serious are you about that 120 bet? I will post video surpassing 120, slowing down, stepping out of my car, and facing the camera to give you personally the finger. There has got to be someone on this forum who can back me up. No one has done it but me? Now thats impossible.

macdaddyslomo May-27th-2005 07:21 PM

Well the first prob is that the speedo reaches only 140, secondly MSP ownershave difficulty hitting those speeds and even with your mods, you wouldnt out run an MSP

QWKSILVR02 May-27th-2005 07:27 PM

Mac I didnt say anything about out running a turbo car. I said I could and have hit 140, now I know nothing about speed limiters, rev limiters or governers. Dont know what years have or dont have what. There is no reason for me to lie about such a thing when I offered (and will get) prove.
