Protege 5 LX?

I was just thinking, since the P5 is only available in the ES-GT trim level, what would it be like if Mazda introduced a "P5 LX." It wouldn't have any of the bodykit (like the Allegro,) and have just the 1.6L or something. They could take away power everything, and price it for about $5000 less. I bet that'd be a good seller to some I'm sure. What do you guys think?

Don't bring the 1.6 back. Slow as hell. At least the 1.8. Other than that, not a bad idea.

I don't know what is it with you guys and the 1.6l, if you get it with the 5speed it's a great car. I see some people that have the 2.0l and the 1.8l with auto trannys who knock on the 1.6l; with a couple of mods a 5speed 1.6l could take on an auto 2.0l... and I think it can hold it's own against a 1.8l auto (both stock). My friend has a 1.8l 125hp Lancer (auto) and I humilliate him everytime he tries to race me, and my 1.6l is bone stock. I'm talking about accelerating in a straight line, without taking any corners, if that were the case it would be even more humiliating for him, Proteges are meant to take hard turns .

I'm not saying that my car is a speed demon, but I think it's good enough. And I am planing to get some mods for it

As for a "P5 LX" being a good alternative, I think it could be, but they should sell it with the 2.0l, just like the current Protege LX.

I don't know how many cars you have driven in your life time, but all I can say is that the 1.6L is slow as ****. I know because I have one. It will take a lot of money just to be as fast or even faster than a 2.0L I would rather do an engine swap which would be cheaper, and thats what I'm going to do. I know you may love your car, but some day you may have to face the truth that the 1.6L is slow as crap. After driving all my other friends cars and other newer proteges, I'm like my car is so slow.

Instead of comparing your 1.6 to Lancer's 2.0, compare it to a Protege 2.0 Its a big difference. The Protege2.0 will run circles around the Lancer2.0 I know becuase me and Lost_Concept usually end up racing all the time. He drives a P5.

if they came out with a "lx" P5, the P5 would lose respect of being a high-end budget compact car.

It would have to have the 2.0L in the states, since all the trims are coming with it now anyway.

JAC, How much power do you get from your 1.6L since you are driving a foreign spec vehicle?

-Kc5zom think it's 109hp

-Red rims, I've not driven any "super cars" but I've driven Accords, Lancers, Sentras, Santa Fes, Corollas and my former car was a 93' Galant. Almost all of them except for the Sentra were at least 2.0s and I don't think my car is slow, at least compared to them. All of them had autos, my 1.6l is a 5speed.

I've also driven old cars like centuries, malibus and LTDs but I don't know if they count.

btw, is your car manual or auto?

-Edit: nevermind, I just checked out your page at cardomain; Of course your car feels slow! it's an auto. I wouldn't have gotten my car with an auto tranny, it makes a HUGE diference, if you take a moment to actually read what I posted you'd notice that I said:" a 5speed 1.6l against an AUTO 2.0l or a 1.8l", I wouldn't stand a chance against my friends Lancer if it were a 5speed.

Yeah, I know autos are slow. Also my auto 1.6L can beat a 2.0 Lancer, thats why I was saying its really no comparison to a pro.

I'd still take a 5speed 1.6l over a 1.8l auto...actually, I did. I could've gotten a sedan with the 1.8l but they only came as an auto.

Well, that is 6 more than the US spec version was producing. You guys probably get a free ticket on the emissions crap and get the extra 6. I just thought Mazda might have tuned it for a little more kick.

MaxxMazda - The more I look at that picture the more I like it. That would be a sweet ride for people who didn't want all the body cladding and junk on the P5. It would be great if Mazda took the current P5 and made it a package above an ES Protege wagon (the pimp appearance package, order code 69) and also made the LX version. It would be even cooler if they offered the P5 body kit as a package for the sedan people (couldn't possibly cost them that much to do). But Ford would be PISSED to have something directly competing against the Focus wagon. Probably because people would realize how big a POS it was and stop buying it.
