P5 Silver Paint Problems??
 

I just got my P5 last week. It has less than 500 miles on it, not driven behind any trucks, gravel roads, etc. Front bumper is clean with no marks, but I'm starting to get paint chips on the HOOD!

Other than having them do the EPP (Teflon wax), nothing has been done to the car yet. What's the deal. I'm very concerned now that the paint is either VERY thin or poor quality.

Anyone encounter this or have any ideas what I need to do at my dealer when I rant and rave? Is this a clear coat issue or what?

Take it to the dealer, it shouldn't be happening this soon. Many modern cars today have some paint issues. Evidently, the paint is allowed less and less lead content and as a result isn't sticking as well. However, at 500 miles and chipping, especially after a dealer applied wax, you should seriously complain.

make yourself at home on one of the big fluffy couches, kick your shoes off, put your feet up on one of the tables, yes we are allowed to do that, mom don't care....and take it easy.

oh...btw....every once in a while a food fight breaks out...so you may not want to wear nice clothes here.

UNFORTUNATELY you have discovered that our cars DO have very thin paint.....welcome to our world.

Just dropped it off at the dealer this eveing. They're going to have the guy that does all thier touchups work on it. They said that if it happens again, bring it right back so they can document it, and possible file warranty work w/Mazda to replace the hood.

One reason that the front end looks good, but the hood is chipped is that the front end is made out of plastic, which gives(flexes) a little, so pebbles will sort of bounce off easier. The steel hood takes the full impact of anything that hits it. :(

Well.....they fixed it, but it's a chip repair, so I can tell.

Anyone know how much a clearcoat would run?

suliman- when you say it chips, does it chip to the primer or down to the metal? if down to the metal, clearcoat is not your answer. you need to get that paint stripped off, re-primed, base&clear coated. probably $350 total.

have your dealer either replace or repaint the entire hood from
the primer if its chipping in 3mm or larger diameter down to
the metal.

nope, i can see black primer where the chip is, no metal yet. So it's either a fluke thing, or someone got some fish oil on the hood before they painted it......

On a serious note, lets just hope it's a fluke, and not a serious paint issue. It's just something that I don't want to have to deal with.

my 2002 silver pro has had nothing like that happen to it (yet) I hope it doesn't happen to me now i'm scared

My White 2002 has crappy paint as well
 

My 2002 P5 is now 1 year old and I have had two paint problems. The first was the foam feet on my Yakima wind delector rubbing right through the paint on the roof. $400 to respray it.

And yesterday I have noticed that the paint has started peeling up in the wheel arch. I'm going into the dealership tomorrow to raise hell!

I'll let you know what they say...

This would be interesting. They touched up the few little spots I had, so I'm keeping an eye on mine.

My Pro has several rock chips down to the black on the front end and my car has 20,000 miles. But then again, I drive on 270 and 495 to and from work and the construction around here lately is killing my car's paint job.

yes, i also have a 2003 silver p5, and yes i did get alot of chips on the bumper even withing the first few weeks, its annoying, i touched them up, and bought a magnet bra so i get no more.. seems to be working. Cheap paint is what it boils down to. I figure if it gets bad enough i will get it repainted..

Quick question here.... we have BLACK primer in our cars? When my car chips, I can see some that are WHITE. Can someone explain?

The primer on my White 2002 is sort of cream coloured, not black. I discovered this when the foam feet of the wind deflector on my Yakima rack rubbed through the top coat. Perhaps yours is the same. The plastic components are black under the paint though.
