Auto to manual swaps have been discussed thoroughly before with Proteges, and the general conclusion is it would be more cost effective to sell your auto and to buy a manual. Run a search and I'm sure you can find some threads on this topic.

there is a BIG difference in acceleration, however the swap itself is not cost effective. That has been determined already. You can buy a 99-00 DX/LX manual for about $4000, and the swap will cost around this much or very close to it

agreed, I would keep the car you're driving now...save up a little, but a '00 protege with mtx and gut it...make it into a neat little track car. Should be awesome if you can drop 400lbs out of it.
