Thread jack:

I get a "pebble in the belt" noise in first and second gear only, and not all the time. I just replaced the belts last weekend, and it did not affect the noise. When the belts were off I spun the water pump around a few times and the bearing seemed fine. My noise sounds like its more on the transmission side of the car. Any ideas?

top off the gear oil? it'll make all sorts of 'pebble in the belt' noise if you have no gear oil. I had a random little bolt back out and when it fell out, out came all my gear oil. when I started up the car (with no gear oil) the sound was horrific!

do you have gear whine in any gears? that would be another indication that the fluid might have dropped to a much too low level.
