$24k including everything plus a few options here and there
sounds about fair. the problem is that a RSX-S costing
about the same (approx $24k including everything) could still
rip the MS Protege without a turbo... and i know if i bought a
RSX-S, i would get a small turbo kit for it along with sus
parts and wheels...probably still comes under $31k max and
much faster than a MS protege...
these are sportcompacts, need to keep the price as low
as possible and beat the more expensive machines like
3-Series, vettes, etc.
im in schaumburg area, got my pro5 at the mazda chysler
dealer on golf road. the only purpose of my pro5 is to
carry stuff and my commuter so i dont intend to do any
turbo mods on it...doesnt make sense to do it either cause
even witha turbo, i would probably be able to do 0-60mph
about 7sec. woohooo.. who cares.

Cush Mazda in Escondido has a black MSP for 22K. That's with a 2K market value mark up. Across the street at the dodge dealer is a SRT-4 for less than 20K. I asked sales guy if that was real price and he said yup, no mark up from MSRP. If I was looking for a car that Neon looks pretty good, at 2 grand less and almost 50 more HP.

yeh, i agree, no meaning spending a fortune on a sportcompact
when you cant even beat a 318 which costs even less. hahaha.
man, talk about getting beatup the next 5 years or watever thats
on the loan and dreading the 35k dollar mistake. hahaha.

Sell the salesman
The MSP is going for well under MSRP in most areas if you play your cards. There are about 10-12 Mazdaspeed dealers in the Washington DC area, several with between 5 and 10 cars on the lot. Dealers will tell you they are selling but just by looking online at the inventory we know they are not. I recently took a test drive at Gaithersburg Mazda. It is part of the Rosenthal group. They quoted me 21,500 over email. But when I went in and talked the salesman's ear off about Mazdas and how I am just interested in something more fun than my PR5 to hold me over till the Euro MPS6 shows up here as a Mazdaspeed 6 he became more reasonable. He gave me a price of 19,326. He had one in the showroom and the other 4 are locked up in a special garage(wheels/stereo theft). I told him I wanted a dealer I could trust and that I would be bringing more business his way if he treated me right. I didn't say that outright of course because that's cheesy but I was sincere about everything I said and understood me perfectly. Everything is still ambiguous on my part since I don't NEED a car. I said I would consider it and get back to him if I thought I could afford it. So now I am letting him languish. Eventually the guy will sell it to me for 18,500 or so plus 500 more off for the graduate discount. Not a bad car for 18K. Too bad Lindell Mazda in St Pete Florida is selling their Mazdaspeeds for 18K outright. Call them up and say you saw the ad for 18K(I am not lying, this is true and can be corroborated on www.msprotege.com, user psifactor is a salesman there). If you let a salesman sell you a car then you've already lost. Never let them say these are hot cars and it's a good price as is. It never is, because you don't need that car. Give them the impression that if they don't swing a great deal then you'll walk because you follow the Mazda maketplace like a religion. If you can't sell the salesman then you haven't done your homework and deserve whatever you get.

$35K
The kid really got ripped off. I did a search for the MazdaSpeed's in Minneapolis area and there are over 50 of them sitting at the dealers. I'm sure they'll be dumping them once the 2003.5 is available and they get rid of Spicy Orange and the Yellow hits. I haven't heard of anyone up here paying over MSRP for these.
