Mazdaspeed Engine Cover

Will the DG engine cover brackets work with the factory MSP cover on my Protege 5?

Raverx17 October-27th-2007 03:03 PM

Yes they will

Shasta October-27th-2007 03:12 PM

Thank you.

KrayzieFox October-27th-2007 04:01 PM

MSP/MP3/DGM engine covers and brackets are all the same. They'll fit.

They are a little pricey but might be worth it instead of the trouble, will wait till the cover arrives and see how complicated it may be. Maybe I'll copy them and sell them . lol

Raverx17 October-27th-2007 06:02 PM

Yes they are They cost me 54 shipped to FL.

You gave me a good idea ;)

You can in reality just plop the engine cover over your valve cover sans brackets. It can handle the heat just fine, I know people that have done it that way for years.

If you get the DG brackets BE VERY CAREFUL. Don't be stupid like me and try to make everything really tight, you'll break welds on the brackets leaving you stranded with the engine cover stuck on >_<

this pic is it without any brackets at all:

Thanks for the tip, I would have thought to torque it down too. I'll rubber mount it.

J-Protege October-27th-2007 11:14 PM

If you float it there, wont it fly around the bay if you take sharp turns or bumps?

no way. I've autocrossed plenty of times with it there. I don't think it's actually possible for it to come loose, but I'd be the one most able to test that theory. I can take out my hood grille, reach in, and try to dislodge it with the hood closed. Since the oil filler neck sticks up above it so far I don't think it is at all possible for it to come off. It doesn't even spin around or anything!

J-Protege October-28th-2007 12:41 AM

Haha, OK, so what do the brackets do? Hold it down more?

Otherwise it is just.. sitting there. i.e. if your hood was open and there was a 75mph wind gust, it might fly away. With the hood closed, no worries. With the brackets, it sits a little bit higher (making the oil filler neck basically invisible, just see the oil cap itself) and is secured in place, so that the next time you do a barrel roll your engine cover doesn't move :)

J-Protege October-28th-2007 01:28 AM

Based on my current track record, I may need the bracket :D

Good to know though, I think I'm gonna pick up an engine now!

3 days later edit: That should say 'pick up an engine cover now :p

Shasta October-30th-2007 05:44 PM

Mine just arrived so now to get brackets.

_Kansei_ October-30th-2007 08:43 PM

or just place it on and then say "oh yeah they really aren't that necessary" --might as well at least give it a try :)

Raverx17 October-30th-2007 09:20 PM

Ok I have another place where I can get you the brackets and screws cheaper than DG let me know if interested I will contact my seller.

Shasta November-1st-2007 08:38 PM

Hell yeah I'm interested. Saving a few dollars here and there works for me.

Raverx17 November-2nd-2007 11:50 AM

Ok I will take pictures of them and post them up as soon as they come in. I ordered them for my freinds P5. Too bad I did not find out about these until now cause I did fork out the 55 bucks to get the brackest from DG. Oh well right live and learn

_Kansei_ November-2nd-2007 12:17 PM

When you hold the DG brackets in your hands you get that "they made this for less than a dollar's worth of material, a couple cheap welds, and a few bends" feeling, and it's not a good feeling.

I haven't bothered with new brackets (both of mine broke.. one broke at a bend, the other was a weld that broke) but if they're cheap I could be interested. I hated the DG ones because it makes changing the spark plugs and coil packs take forever!

here's a pic of the DG ones installed:
http://picasaweb.google.com/claureta...65601346980770

the left one is broken in the front.. it should bend down and then bolt to the valve cover but not anymore

Raverx17 November-2nd-2007 12:24 PM

Tell me about it they felt so cheap when I took them out of the packaging. I could not belive I paid almost 60 bucks for two pieces of metal that I could have gotten at my local hardware store and fabricated myself.

But these are suppose to be maid out of better quality materials and should withstand higher stresses than the DG ones. Because I feel like mine are going to give out any morent. :(. So far had them on for about a month and everythings ok. As soon as they come in Ill post pictures of them before and after intallation.

Shasta November-2nd-2007 06:59 PM

Those cheap pieces of tin are the DG ones. Screw that I'd definitely make my own before buying those. I thought they would be aluminum.

_Kansei_ November-2nd-2007 07:10 PM

they are aluminum.

Raverx17 November-2nd-2007 09:09 PM

1st off its shitty aluminum and 2nd the welds suckass.

J-Protege November-2nd-2007 10:33 PM

Bitter much :D

Sounds to me like I can spend $0 and have the engine cover sit there just fine.

I can name at least 5 people that I know who have been doing it that way for years :P

you can make a makeshift ziptie chain anchor just in case it tries to fly away in the really tight space on top of it with the hood closed :P

J-Protege November-2nd-2007 11:17 PM

You and your zipties Chris :)

Shasta November-3rd-2007 06:48 PM

That's half ass just letting it sit there , that damn thing would rattle like a banshee if left like that. Lets all sing together, M-I-C-K-E-Y M-O-U-S-E.

maybe mine doesn't rattle because the engine isn't really allowed to move much? :P

Shasta November-7th-2007 02:52 PM

I picked up some nice aluminum strips and stainless hardware but after looking at it without the use of a vise it would be difficult to get the bends that are required. Was going to make the brackets attach to the cover first then design brackets to attach to the cover bracket as well. I have no welder, so welding the aluminum is out.

Anyone selling their Mazdaspeed Engine covers or does anyone know where I can get my replacement... Nevermind... it's just extra weight. No point really. I am gonna try to make my MSP a race ready automobile....

a little off topic, but do they make an automatic MSP? I was watching a Streetfire.net video, this guy was driving an MSP and he completely plastered this SRT-4 all over the road and someone commented with "Oh he was smoking and his arm was out his window so he was driving an AUTO."

No such thing as an automatic Mazdaspeed vehicle, ever. It would just be a sin
