Interior Swap Anyone?
I have a 2002 protege5, exterior is red, interior is black. All the interior is in very nice condition. I was wondering if anyone out there with gray interior would like to do a swap for my black interior??? I live in painesville, ohio. If anyone is interested let me know?
Thanks, Chris |
P5s only came with two interior types--charcoal cloth and black leather. Do you mean you want to switch with the MSP interior, which has orange stitching and "titanium" gray accents? Or maybe some other (lesser) Protege?
|
as far as i know the third gen protege came in charcoal or tan in the early ones
|
I was unaware that the P5's only came with 2 interior colors. I would like to do an interior swap though. If there is a tan interior, I would swap with that.
|
you really dont want to do that. its butt fucking ugly
|
Why do you want to swap? It's really none of my business, but curiosity got the better of me.

I would like to swap out my seats, headliner, carpet, and door panels. Just try and change it up a little |
^^ you'd have to get stuff from a DX/LX Protege, and the seats aren't the same thing. Aside from that yeah it's a personal choice, but swapping everything but the dash, steering wheel, and center console would look mighty awkward.

I have only owned the car for a couple months now, but their is so much I would like to do to it. I have never owned a Mazda before, and after having 3 Volkswagens, it's taking some time to adjust. Once I do a couple things to my car, I think I will like it a lot better! So any help would be appreciated |
a gray interior would look a lot nicer than tan, that's for sure. You can get gray pieces from the DX/LX as well, they were available with different interior colours, and plus if you did gray the dashboard wouldn't look terribly out of place. -- plus you wouldn't need to replace the seats :)

did you turbo your mazda, or was it already turboed, so the protege DX/LX interior will fit in my car?

The DX/LX also has green illumination on all the interior stuff as well as black gauge faces vs the white or silver that you have (white for 2002.0, silver for 2002.5 and up). If you have any specific interior swapping questions let me know and I'll let ya know if I have any answers. As for the turbo, I did it myself. The only 3rd gen Protege that came turbo was the Mazdaspeed Protege (2003-2003.5, limited production): http://www.racingbeat.com/Gallery/MS03.jpg |
if you are interested here's a picture of the Mazdaspeed Protege interior.. any piece is a direct swap for the Protege5:
http://www.edmunds.com/media/roadtes...ge.int.500.jpg the seats look different but it's just a different cover. You actually have quite a bit of flexibility with interior mods just buying different OEM parts and swapping them. enjoy! |

The pedals and shift knob are sparco, but have mazda part numbers. The steering wheel is the same as the P5 steering wheel but with different leather. People have big problems with the silver leather (as it is obviously a coating on the leather) getting permanently dirty looking and worn. The 2003.0 has orange stitching on everything (seats, steering wheel, etc) and the 2003.5 has yellow. The 2003.5 also has the same shift knob but with "MAZDASPEED" on it instead of SPARCO, and the pedals are different (they aren't the same pedals, and they say "MAZDASPEED" on them. I know I have pictures of my mazdaspeed pedals somewhere around here.
The mazdaspeed Protege also had two different floormats available. One set has "MAZDASPEED" embroidered in much like the stock P5 ones say "MAZDA" or something (I don't remember). I think those are the 2003.0 The 2003.5 has a reinforced rubber piece where your heels rest when you are on the pedals, and it says MAZDASPEED molded into that. I doubt there are really any pictures online of the mats, but I have them so I can get pictures of them if you'd like. |
Yeah, I'd like to see the pictures of the matts. The steering wheel is cool with the gray on it, but I think I would just keep the stock wheel in the P5, as far as the interior goes, I like the black and gray leather, I was looking more along the lines of gray cloth, and just keeping the dash the same. I like the shift knob on the protege, the style is nice, I would like to pick one of those up if I couldn't find an all black one. I would pick up a set of those pedals too, those are sweet. my car was manufactured in 04/02, has the white gauges, with the black number, and illuminates in red. i hope i can make my car look half way as nice as I think it could look.

You dont want to go with tan ,it is extremly difficult to keep clean ,it doesn't wear well . I have LX with the tan interior ,I hate it ,I would rather have charcol or black

Black and silver, but there are tons of black shift knobs available for your car. TWM, Momo, etc...

Perfect. What about the shift knobs, does Mazda make an all black 5 speed shift knob to fit my car, or are they all black & silver
|
So if mazda does not make a protege5 with gray interior, does anyone out there with a protege want to swap their gray interior for my black? Someone out there has to be interested in swapping?
I don't have the cash to go out and buy all new interior. |

I feel like swapping the P5 interior with one from a lesser Protege is a downgrade. Your car will end up looking neutered.
There are other cheap mods you can do to personalize your P5, like blacking out headlights, repainting the emblems, and peeling off the side molding. A shorter shift lever from an MSP or a short shifter, plus some polyurethane shifter bushings would really improve the driving experience for not much cash. |

Is your Protege5 the 2002.0 that came with some weird shift knob that kinda deteriorates quickly? edit: these pics are from an mx-6 but I think that's the exact knob: http://images.cardomain.com/member_i...86_46_full.jpg |

I have a 2002, but the knob is not deteriorating. I am just a little tired of it. |

I think that getting the interior recovered in gray cloth might cost more then I want to spend. I hope that I can evently find a interior that I would be willing to swap out for. Thanks for some good suggestions on the modding for my car, I might try some of that, I like the idea of blacking out the headlights, and I might do diffrent brake lights. We'll see, I have a while to make changes to my car, I just want everything to be done like NOW. I just have to be patient. |
Sounds good. I know what you mean about the waiting--I have been planning my suspension upgrade for like 6 months--now I'm tired of thinking about it, just want to get it done.
Have fun with the modding! |
Remember though.. the gray seats are a downgrade. They don't have the same bolstering or anything.
|
You mean the P5 and ES have different seats? Are the P5's more like bucket/racing seats or something?
I didn't know there was a difference, besides the leather option. |
ES and P5 have the same seats.
