I am thinking about install a intake

But i have no idea what is the efffict?does it waste the gas or damage the car engine?

macdaddyslomo September-24th-2006 11:34 PM

actually the intake usually helps your car get better mileage...however, you tend to step harder on the pedal after the install and waste more gas

protege2001ES September-25th-2006 01:08 AM

I mean for the usually driven what helps?can you tall the advantage and disadvantage about the intake? other question my front brake has strange noise when i hit the brake.
I have just change the brake a few month ago. By the way my car is the protege 2001 ES.

kargoboy September-25th-2006 06:11 AM

Intake: louder than stcok
Hp Gain: Minimal, but still there, 2-4 whp gain
Filter is permanent only should need cleaning.

Other than that not much else to say about an intake.
If you want to read a lot more about them, and the choices, I suggest the seach button.

As for your brakes I have no idea what you mean by 'strange noise'
You will have to provide more detail.

protege2001ES September-25th-2006 06:56 PM

the brake sound like the bicycle brake which without lube. It only happened at the sunny days.

macdaddyslomo September-26th-2006 07:37 AM

is english NOT your first language ?

KrayzieFox September-26th-2006 09:23 AM

Even if it's not, he types better than Mr. Tooslow ... give him a break Mac -- at least we can understand what he's saying without having to read it a million times.

macdaddyslomo September-26th-2006 09:41 AM

wasn't trying to knock him..I was legitimately asking

protege2001ES September-28th-2006 02:11 AM

english is not my first language sorry for the hard undstanding. by the way what is MAC?
I am so mad to the break. Because it happend before when i get it to the mazda company they said i have to change a break so i changed but it happend again.

wizteknet September-28th-2006 04:29 AM

New Brake pads can make squeals before they are broke in, also you could be missing a spring or you might need to bleed the brakes to get air out of the lines if your brakes dont work quickly. Usually a month or a maybe 100 or more miles it will stop. Also I assume your talking about the front disc brake in particular, since I know less about my rear drum other then squeezes could be more caused by old pads on drum.

protege2001ES September-30th-2006 03:52 PM

I find a OEM intake only about $100. Is this compay good? Is it a good deal?Because I only know the AEM intake. I have never know about the OEM.

KrayzieFox September-30th-2006 04:02 PM

OEM means that it's the factory intake that came with the car when you bought it. Don't bother spending the money ...

AEM is a good company but expensive. ($200+)
Injen is another one that makes quality stuff but also ... expensive. (also $200+)

If you want a quality intake for cheap, Simota is going to be your best and only best. You won't have much luck finding their products anywhere except on this forum. PM Kargoboy or visit this thread .

Good luck.

protege2001ES September-30th-2006 09:50 PM

I am in Canada. The AEM intake will be how much? Does anyone has a good website sall this kinds of products?

KrayzieFox October-1st-2006 03:52 AM

Here are some prices:

AEM SHORT RAM Intakes

P-Garage $231
AEM $179
eBay $90
P5-Online $200
Corksport $192
Hopup Racing $195

Injen COLD AIR Intakes

P-Garage $239
eBay $100 (Used!)
P5-Online $239
Corksport $262
Hopup $235

K&N Typhoon COLD AIR Intakes

P-Garage $259
eBay $212
Corksport $380
Hopup $245

Now let's review these findings eh?

The lowest priced AEM sells at $90+shipping through eBay and it's a SHORT RAM!
The lowest priced Injen sells for $235 unless you'd like a used one off eBay for $100. Granted they do seem like great quality products, an aluminum pipe and some clamps aren't worth over $200 to me ...
Then we have the K&N Typhoon intakes that go for $212+shipping on eBay and yet again ... are probably not worth the money.

So at this point I hope you see that intakes for our cars are quite expensive and unless you have lots of extra money laying around and don't mind paying A LOT more just for the brand name of the product, then you'll probably search for something that's a better deal.

Now all this time I just spent looking up all these websites and prices was to show you there is a brand just as good, perhaps better on the market and is being sold by one of our local board members.

Kargoboy's SIMOTA Intakes!!!

Cold Air Intakes $85 (compared to $200+ for Injen and K&N)
Twin Charger Intakes $90

I hope you can handle it from here ...

kargoboy October-1st-2006 09:17 AM

And mac says I'm the pimp, lol.

Looks like I may have to start paying a finders' fee!

cc101 October-1st-2006 10:49 AM

KrayzieFox October-1st-2006 12:01 PM

kargoboy October-1st-2006 04:02 PM

Nice pic, I'm adding it to my collection.
The check is in the mail for it. My cheks r gud.

protege2001ES October-2nd-2006 01:08 AM

Thanks KrayzieFox. By the way what is the short ram means. What's the different? did you put a turb on your P5?

KrayzieFox October-2nd-2006 08:29 AM

You see how my intake pipe goes down into the fender by my wheel? That's the concept behind a Cold Air Intake. The idea is to get air from outside the engine that is much cooler.

A Short Ram Intake has much shorter pipes that stay inside the hood so the intake draws air that is much warmer because of all the heat the engine gives off.
http://www.protege5online.com/AEM_Shortram.gif

Generally you want colder air, so a Cold Air Intake would be "better" if you're aiming to make your car faster. Now if an intake is going to be the only mod you do to your car, it won't make a difference which one you go with. The gains are anywhere from 1-3 HP with both Short Ram and Cold Air Intakes. Now if you were going to install a header and a cat-back exhaust too then the Cold Air might actually come in useful.

And lastly, no I do not have a turbo ... I can only dream about it.

protege2001ES October-2nd-2006 11:33 AM

I don't understand why no one put a turbo on the P5 or P. As i know that we car has a space to put a turbo on.

macdaddyslomo October-2nd-2006 12:04 PM

plenty of people do have turbo's....just not a lot of members on here...

protege2001ES October-2nd-2006 05:06 PM

The mazda company workers told me that protege +turbo has over 200HP. I am so interesting about it. But I can not find any turbo which is mad for our car.

macdaddyslomo October-2nd-2006 05:09 PM

www.hiboost.com

check it out

Roddimus Prime October-2nd-2006 06:10 PM

i'm just wondering why no'one ever put a supercharger on a protege....seems like that would be a cool idea.

bwahaha, anywhoo.... Just wanted to say hey to the new member. Welcome to the forum.

protege2001ES October-2nd-2006 07:01 PM

It's too expensive. A turbo cost US$3,800.00.

Roddimus Prime October-2nd-2006 08:21 PM

whats too expensive??

macdaddyslomo October-2nd-2006 09:06 PM

can of worms, meet can opener

KrayzieFox October-2nd-2006 09:45 PM

You guys are gonna confuse the foreign guy ..

Roddimus Prime October-2nd-2006 10:18 PM

hahaha, remember what got me started the first time.

I hate it when people say stuff like that.

"It's not been done because it can't be." or "It's too expensive" or "It doesn't make any power"

Don't ever think because you can't buy it off the shelf that it's not worth trying or making yourself. There's something to be said for ingenuity.

protege2001ES October-3rd-2006 12:19 AM

I agree with you. When I was asking the mazda deal upgrade my protege to the protegespeed, they just say it's too expensive and they tell me it's about CAD$3000.
When heard that I thought it is o.k if it include everything.

KrayzieFox October-3rd-2006 12:46 AM

$3000 CAD translates into what ... $2500 USD? That is a LOT of money to put in a stock Mazdaspeed turbo setup. You can get those for about $800 (used) with everything needed for a direct bolt on!

The reason the HiBoost is $3800 is because it is a high quality bolt-on kit that can push much more boost than the Mazdaspeed one. You get what you pay for, but if you're looking to convert your 2.0L into a Mazdaspeed turbo 2.0L you don't have to spend $2500 ...

protege2001ES October-3rd-2006 12:59 AM

I like the protegespeed not only because of the turbo but also the bump kit.

KrayzieFox October-3rd-2006 01:11 AM

Oh I get it now, you didn't want just turbo but the body kit too. Why not just look for an actual MSP? About the same amount of money, and a lot less work.

protege2001ES October-3rd-2006 01:21 AM

The MSP is not sale anymore.

dudeondacouch October-3rd-2006 05:29 AM

he means look for a used one

wizteknet October-4th-2006 01:02 AM

I'm going to put a turbo on my P within 6mths or sooner

As long as this job holds out. I've got a friend I met that has a older RX-7 GT with a Turbo to help me out on adjusting the psi. I found its really not all that expensive to build by pieces T-3 Turbo exhaust manifold is only $300 or so shipped, and you can find 100's of T-3's or equiv on ebay for some as low as $200-400 bucks. My only other item that I'll have to find cheaper is the ECU, might try looking for a mazda with turbo in a junk yard maybe, intercoolers can be found cheap in the junks yards, and a oil cooler kit for $200. Air gauges for inside engine adjust & on for the interior of car. He's also added new injectors from Fords so, another junk yard item to hunt for. The trick is to just take your time & hunt down the parts, I just have more of a advantage becuase greater houston 2 miles from me has alot of junk yards for parts.

protege2001ES October-5th-2006 09:45 PM

Thanks everybody! Finaly, I get the intake but just short ram intake,I want a coolintake but they don't that kind of intake which for 2001ES. The sound is good, but I don't feel much different about WHPs.

protege2001ES October-5th-2006 09:49 PM

By the way, I may think about the hid light. Can anyone knows where can get the most cheap one? And it will be how much?
