How to remove part of the dash?

I want to paint the black center part of the dash on my 99, the part around the deck and AC controls. I cant find any way to pop it out. Anyone have any pointers?

It will snap off. get something soft enough not to scratch the piece but hard enough to pry it open from the top and bottom. The hardest part is that the AC controls are screwed into the back of that piece. So you have to squeeze in a screwdriver to get the screws out it is not easy. Good luck

Umm - your best bet is NOT to try to unscrew the HVAC controls.

You should disconnect the cables instead, and unscrew the HVAC box after the trim is out of the car - this is MUCH easier.

Check this thread for some pics I posted: http://www.protegeclub.com/forum/sho...&threadid=9608

And if you would, kindly use the search function (top right of the page). This topic has been covered in great detail already, and you'd have found more info than you could handle had you searched first.

Got it out no problem...now one last question...has anyone had any trouble painting the bumpy outer edges?

i filled the bumps with a putty from the auto parts store and let it dry. then wet-sanded it until it was smooth. then started painting. it looks pretty good but i was in a rush to have it done before nopi last year so i really need to redo it again.
