Gov. chips
 

Do other countries have gov. installed safety chips to cut the engine off before it reaches peak speed. Just curious. Oh, and do you guys think a Crown Vic. police cruiser could reach 150 if it didn't have the chip? Later.

A police car definetaly doesn't have a speed limiter. Depending on the configuration, it's possible it can go 150, but probably won't. Some departments have Camaros though...

Most definitely. Almost all police cruisers come with superchargers and the like. You'll be hard pressed to outrun a police cruiser with a street legal car.

Most cruisers do not have superchargers and the like. In fact C&D (or motor trend) did a side by side test with a police interceptor CV and a stock CV, the stock was faster. The fastest thing about police cars is the radio, being able to call a chopper and some of the few specialized cruisers, ie camaro, mustang, etc. The other big thing that I've seen with cruisers is that the cooling systems are really beefed up. So they can cruise at high speeds for a long period of time. This is fairly advantages as most cars can't do that.

As for the governor chips, it kinda depends on the manufacturer. I've read that the european auto manufactures have a "gentleman's" agreement about 155mph for all their cars. The big Japanese motorcyle manufacturers limit there bikes to ?189mph I know ford has had some governors in some cars as well as other companies. Most are fairly easy to defeat.

No they don't. They have some beefed up cooling systems with external oil and tranny coolers, silicon hoses, heavier fan clutches(for those w/o electric fans) heavier duty shocks, larger rear sway bars, better exhaust, and the police speedometer.

The amusing thing is that the sport model of the crown vic IS faster in the 1/4 and could outhandle the PI. I remember that article in MT. Most cars are limited by power and aerodynamics.

In Maryland the State Trooper Caprice's used to have governors. My nextdoor neighbor was a cop and I remember him complaining about how the EFI was set to cut off at a certain speed. I'm not sure if that is still the case though.

Not to mention all the shit they pile in them (guns, cages, computer) to add a wicked amount of weight to an already HEAVY car!!

Most European manufacturer's do not govern Europe market bound cars. Just NA bound ones. And high end sports cars usually do not carry a governor.

DOes anyone know how to remove the governor? Am I the only one here where they cant go past a 100?

my 1.8L is governed at 190kmph, about 120mph

I thought that protege's didn't have governors, rather they were limited aerodynamically.
Sorry it seems that 1.8's have a governor. 2.0's don't. There is a rev limiter but theoretically if you can get enough hp you should be able to go as fast as you want (to a certain limit anyway)
That poor 1.6 just don't have enough juice to get more than what you're getting. I had a tempo with about the same amount of hp and more wieght and it topped out around 90 or so.:rolleyes:

I guess it's just the city I live in. :dunno: But I know for a fact that all police crown vics, and some Imapalas on our force have superchargers. The reason I'm so sure of this is that I personally know the mechanic who works on local government vehicles, he was an old buddy of my sister. And he's the one who installs the superchargers. Though we do have a reasonably small force, in a town of around 30,000. And since we don't have any specialized vehicles, i.e. Camaros, I guess they improve on all of the cruisers. I just assumed it was like this everywhere. My mistake.

I'd be very surprised if the Chevy Impala police cruisers around here couldn't get above 150 mph. In fact I heard they could go 180...
