My 1999 Protege LX with auto trans has a rattle that sounds like it is coming from the area of the driver side front wheel well.It sounds like someone knocking on a wheel rim with a screwdriver handle.It does not occur on all bumps. It seems to be at lower speeds over small stutter type bumps.I have been under the car and checked every nut and bolt and exhaust.I have no idea where it is coming from.If anybody has experience with this or has any ideas, I'd appreciate hearing from you.Thanks

 

check your front struts, mine did the same thing and my boot on the strut was ripped slightly, and cause dirt to get in there, and it rattled, then got progressivly worse.

 

I'm in agreement with the GOLD on this one.

1999 car, the struts might just be nearing the end anyway, even if the boot isn't ripped.

If it is distinctive enough of a sound, I would take a small wrench and start playing xylophone on stuff under the car - start by tapping the strut. If you can duplicate the approximate sound, you've probably found your culprit.
