Engine in 99 Mazda Protege

I have a 99 Mazda Protege LX 1.6 Litre.
It has got 71K miles, hence I am planning to change its timing belt. But I want to know what is the type of engine in this model. Is it non-interference which means if the timing belt breaks it will bring the car to stop , but will not cause any damage to the engine ?

Please let me know asap.

Thanks,
Choco

Engine in 99 Mazda Protege

What is recommended mileage for changing timing belt in 99 Mazda Protege in PA state ? is it 60K or 105K ?
As you confirmed that this model got a non-interference enine. As a result engine will not damage even if the timing belt breaks. Does this mean that I can hold on changing the timing belt till the last moment ?

Thanks for you reply,
Choco

150,000 km is a good point to change your belt and pump at the same time. although i will admit i didnt take my own advise and changed just my belt at about the 150k mark. My ride is going on 200,000km soon and still running strong,

not recommended, but it won't hurt anything if it breaks, it'll just leave you stranded

i'd hate that stranded part. my car is doing about 125,000km atm but i read earlier that you should change it at 100,000km. does different engines have different times to change the belt?
