5 spd or Manumatic Trans?

I've been debating this for the last week. What should I go for?
Advantages and Disadvantages?

The shifter is not cable actuated in the p5 is it?

KpaBap October-8th-2002 10:02 PM

I would DEFINITELY get a 5-speed. It is much, much, MUCH more fun and you have complete control over the shift points. Manumatic is still better than full automatic I suppose, but from what I've heard the shifts are slow and sometimes the car will still shift even if you didn't tell it to. :dunno:

I don't know about the shifter, but I do know that the clutch is hydraulic instead of cable-operated.

Edit: P.S. With manual you get shorter gear ratios because you have 5 gears, whilst with the "Sport" Auto and the regular auto you get only 4 gears. Shorter gear ratios = more acceleration, but lower top speed, and vice versa.

SEA_P5 October-8th-2002 10:05 PM

It really depends on you...will you be the main driver, or will you have other drive your vehicle...the reason why I chose an automatic is that I want to be able to know that if I need someone to drive my car somewhere for me, that by being an automatic, any person can drive the car.

I'd say go for the autostick. Easier to put in a remote starter.

kcbhiw October-8th-2002 10:13 PM

The manumatic still goes through a torque converter, hence, you still have the higher drivetrain losses with an auto over the manual.

shifter is not cable actuated in the p5 is it?
No it is not cable actuated. It uses "solid" linkage.

Hawkeye October-8th-2002 10:27 PM

go with the manual. IMO, it's a lot more fun!

NegatiZE October-8th-2002 10:27 PM

For me the choice would be easy - 5 speed all the way. This is the last auto I will be getting unless I get one of my legs chopped off.

Funky Buddha October-8th-2002 10:32 PM

Sweet..just wanted to get some more opinions. I've test driven the auto, and 5 spd versions of the p5 and I liked the stick the best. Just got more kick to it. I liked the clutch feel on this car than any other I've tried. It sits perfectly..not too high, not too low. Takes very little effort to push it

No I'll be the primary driver and most of my friends can drive stick if they're gonna drive my drunk ass home :) My dad and mom can drive stick but they opt for auto since they're getting old but they can drive the car in case of emergencies. So no worries.

fat.elvis October-8th-2002 10:36 PM

5spd

EZ as 123 October-8th-2002 11:23 PM

use the clutch :D

fat.elvis October-9th-2002 12:31 AM

I just put a down payment on a loaded Silver '03 ES tonight. (O%
deals still going at least for the next couple more months gotta love it :))
And I'm going to be patiently waiting for several weeks. :(
Because I wouldn't choose the auto.

Everytime a salesman tried to convince me to buy a "manumatic"
it was like someone asking me if it would be fun to be castrated.
It hurts to even hear the words. And it hurt to even explain why.

To each his own though. :)

SEA_P5 October-9th-2002 02:04 AM

I feel sorry for your parents if they have to drive you home drunk...:barf:

If that is the case...get a manual.

ZoomZoomH October-9th-2002 02:13 AM

every night I cry myself to sleep that I bought my 00 ES in automatic, when I wasn't as into cars as I am now :crying:

curse the Protege for making driving fun!!!

it's like a great relationship that never completely satisfies you :tear:

Sir Nuke October-9th-2002 03:18 AM

well here is my vote too..

STICK!!!!

They never have and never will. Just in emergency, if they need to use the car, then at least I know they can drive stick. Plus I'm usually the DD anyways cause I rarely drink.

[SIZE=4]STICK[/STIZE]

oh and if you DO get an auto, and put one of those fake
shift boots to try to look like a manual i'll castrate you myself.

Funky Buddha October-9th-2002 08:48 PM

funny.

VagaBond-X October-10th-2002 03:23 AM

Manual thats all I can say, driving auto is too boring, I haven't tried the manumatic, but either way, I'd choose the 5 spd over anything.

The thing about the higher top speed with longer gear ratios, which is true, but there is a speed governor which limits it to I think it was 115mph, even though mine goes closer to 120mph until it kicks in, so it wouldn't matter, the faster acceleration is what would matter, cause you'll get to the limit allot quicker.:D

also use Search, because there has been a huge discussion on this already

randallb October-10th-2002 07:47 AM

5 speed is rod linkage

In reply to the original question, the 5 speed shifter is not a cable linkage, but rather is rod actuated. Nice crisp shifts.

Get the 5 speed - you'll be able to learn to drive a slow car fast!

rodslinger October-10th-2002 08:26 AM

I purchased the auto as the wife is the primary driver plus the other two cars are also a stick. She felt that if something happened, we needed an auto. Poor argument but the car was for her so I got what she wanted. In reality, we test drove both. I've actually been pretty pleased with the auto. It shifts quickly and smooth. Also, it's only a new torque converter away from leaving you manual shifted guys in the dust at the drag strip.

dsamon October-20th-2002 11:24 PM

autostick

I have the autostick version of the MP5. I have always driven 5spd 4-bangers and I must admit that after some stop-and-go commuter traffic in my '98 Civic LX 5spd, I decided that I would not buy another 5spd until I was purchasing a "real" sportscar. I have been very pleased with the performance of the autostick and the pseudo-manual shift capability is fun to play with when I'm so inclined. I like not having to work the clutch in stop-and-go traffic. Admittedly, I'm getting old though.... ;)

stevepr October-21st-2002 08:19 AM

Manual all the way

Like many in the club I was one that bought the manumatic to please my wife who cant drive manual. But I had to I had no choice. When I test drove the car I chose not to test the manual because I am a big manual fan. To this day I really dont know what I am missing but that was the whole point. The manuamatic is ok but it dosent feel at all that you are driving a Stick( no cluth and late shifting response time) if you are driving your car hard you will get into the redline easy.

If I could go back in time I would get a manaul in a heart beat.

hmm, seems like many of the guys here use "the wife" as an excuse for getting an automatic/manumatic transmission Proteges....

Do most women really REALLY dislike shifting gears themselves??????

walight01 October-21st-2002 10:33 AM

most women are too incompatent to learn to drive a stick, some can like my wife and a few others out there, but there are a bunch you just refuse to learn. manualls accel better but the auto doen't have a higher top speed. even though the gears on the 5 speed are shorter, there is still 5 of them so the actually at longer the the 4 speedauto, also you can reach the top speed alot sooner in a manuall b/c of the shorter gear and lach of HP!! If our car had 300 HP, it really wouldn't matter now would it ;) I got a manuall and i love it. I have 50K miles and about 20k of it was stop and go and i wouldn't have it any other way. they only thing i cry about at night is that i didn't take it up the butt on the payments and just get the car i really wanted, a WRX.

MAD SEASON October-21st-2002 01:25 PM

automatics are for crack addicts, and five speeds are for pure speed......why get these cars if you want a automatic, its really stupid, get a nice ford ranger with a 2.3 liter, I mean if you have to even ask this question auto or five speed, this car isnt really for you.,......have a nice day

walight01 October-21st-2002 01:29 PM

ok you can't really compare anything to a ford ranger, they just plain out suck

My wife as well as I have always owned manual cars. But I don't think it has to do with dislike. For me it had more to do with attitude. My pregnant wife has a much better attitude NOT having to drive a stick in stop-n-go traffic every day.

Go back to school. Autos and manuals both have beneifits. Torque multiplication of the converter usually gives auto tranny cars higher towing capacities. You'll most always see the auto tranny cars winning at the drags. Why? Consistency. Manuals are good too. Would you pick an auto on an auto-x course? Probably not.

walight01 October-21st-2002 02:44 PM

yes auto usually work at the drag strip b/c of concisty, but also b/c they only have 2 gears to choose from. if you are going to use a protege to tow something....i'll shoot you. all big towing vehicles are manuals neways

MAD SEASON October-21st-2002 02:52 PM

TOWING????? THE F*UCK is this guy talking about,,,,,,lol towing,,,,I am speechless,,,well not really,,,,,drag racing is more fun when its manual,,,screw consistincy,,,,Go for the thrill,,,,,towing,,,,,,,lol

Two gears?

Shoot someone for towing with a Protege?

All big towing vehicles are manuals anyways?

I'm not saying that I didn't want the manual myself. But I bought the car primarily for someone else. And drag racing a stick is fun. Fun once you get the launch perfected and can keep from missing gears and trashing transmissions.

Rawny12017 October-21st-2002 09:19 PM

5 speed...a lot more fun than automatic

walight01 October-21st-2002 09:31 PM

manual transmissions also last alot longer and alot cheaper to replace in the long run, alcohol draggsters are usually 2 speeds, but they also run a 4 sec quartermile

Scuse you. I had a Ford Ranger for a long ass time. And it damn sure did not suck. I also have the F-150, which also does not suck and will spank your Protege's ass all over the highway, Mr. Bosch +4 person.

i'm sorry that you think your ford ranger is awesome, but as the f-150, the V8 has potential, but if its stock, you need to retract your last statement, since the last time i raced one, it gov. at 98 mph. OH and P4's RULE!!!!!:D

MarkSpark October-22nd-2002 03:40 PM

I'm 21. Was never taught manual, never wanted to learn. More fun? Who cares. Dont wanna bother. I'd rather be holding my girls hand when I drive than a stick. :D

HAHAHAHAHAHAHA,

Girls hand, hahahaha, that would be jks, watching someoen hold his girls hand for the whole drive, haha, well if they in the backseat and the guy not driving then it owuld be cool, but otherwise HAHAHA!!!

Oh yeah, I'll quote my previous post for this manual vs. manumatic thing!!

What would your alternative to a Ranger be? The S-10? A joke. The Frontier? Hey I could use some cheap plastic body cladding and a S/C engine that produces as much output as a NA. The Tacoma? Better than the other two but not even close. The Ranger/B are the best trucks in their class. Have been that way for a long time.

Big surprise, some people actually need a truck but don't want a full size. So they buy a compact! And for people who are not speed racer, or need a backseat, a Ranger with an automatic will do the same job. 2.3L actually had a lot of tuning potential with the previous generations, the 3 and 4.0L even more so.

As to the F-150 thing... I think you should pull up to one of the ones that says "Triton" (Single or extended cab) on the side and challenge him to a race. It won't matter if his is an automatic or a manual. If he is even halfway competent he is going to spank your ass. By the time he hits his governor you will be far far behind him.
