Mazda filter and Motul synthetic :D

I just changed my oil a couple days ago and I had such a whore of a time with the oil filter. I bought one of those oil filter socket things and it fit the new filter but not the original one so that was useless.

Anyways I used a Mazda oil filter and Castrol Syntec 5W-50

Valvoline 10W30

There you go. I just replaced my Motormaster filter (I believed it was a Fram product but, nope), anyway I put in a V6 626 filter and used Quaker State 10W30.:)

dont use STP filters either. For some reason they are friggin tiny. I took the one off my car and the engine belched almost half a quart outta the thing. Thats means there is waaaay to much pressure bottlenecking at that damn little thing. Other than that POS ive used purolator forever and no problems. But since my next car is gonna be a crazy fast car (rx-8 or STI) its gettin royal purple :D I wish they would make it to showrooms already so i can tear up the road alittle in a testdrive.

Well, i guess im one of the different people here as far as oil viscosity goes, but here what i use:

After the 3K mile mark, i switched to Mobil 1 0w-40 and Purolator Pure One filter for the V6 engine. The 0w-40 still nets me a good 27mpg with shifting at 4Krpms on average and the very occasional high rpm shift for quick acceleration.

But now, I am using (and so should everyone else IMHO) the german made Castrol Syntec 0w-30 "Red Label" with the same purolator filter as above. This oil is actually the European Castrol SLX 0w-30 which is awesome to say the least due to its specs. But, i would use either it or Mobil 1 0w-40 (as its spec'd out to be used in engines that call for an xW-30 oil.

I use the Fram Tough Guard. The tough guard is better than the standard fram in that its construction is more sturdy and there is greater filter media surface area. For oil I use Mobil 1 5W-30.

I used to use Purolator or Mobil 1 filters but since I have moved to the state of Washington it has been difficult for me to find anything but Fram and Pennzoil filters. Hell there are hardly any auto parts stores out here (I guess in Texas more people work on their own vehicles while everybody around Seattle would rather have someone else do it).

EDIT: I almost forgot: I use the same filter on the protege and my mirage (which is slightly larger than the standard protege filter). This filter is also used on the V-6 mazdas and more powerful mitsubishi 4 cylinder cars (turbo eclipse, 2.4L 3G eclipse).

I use Mazda Protege OEM filters and Castrol GTX 5W-30. Used Mobil1 once, the engine was a little smoother, but price difference didn't justify it. I change the oil every 3000km though.

Consider looking up an amsoil filter. I've just recently switch over two vehicles to this filter and you can tell the difference almost immediatly on startup. I always use one of the following mobile 1 oils. Ow-20, 0w-30 and 5w-20, 5w-30 I will use the thicker oils if I can't find the thinner ones. I find the thinner oils work a bit better in my experience. I normally mix my oils using two quarts of one of the thinner oils and doing the rest with one of the thicker oils it really helps a lot on those cold start days. I change the oil between 5000 and 7000 miles. Two of the cars I take care of have over 100k on them. One is a 98 Pontiac Firebird formula the other a 97 pontiac transport. Niether one burns or leaks any oil and they both still run perfect and pass smog with flying colors.


Oh yeah Fram= Crap. I used em a couple of times and I got alot of backflow thus getting a very noisy valve train.

Amsoil 5-30 Full synthetic (I have tried Mobil1 before it was good but for a $1 per quart more = $3 per change more Amsoil offers a better deal, engine is even quieter and smoother and it rev's with less strain than with Mobil1)
I keep a close eye on the oil level and usually keep it in the middle or 3/4 between L and F mark on the dipstick.

I'm changing at around 3 - 3.5K miles.

Filter ; Purelator Pure One ($5 for a very good filter), I will start using V6 version and will keep oil and filer in for 5K miles.
