Time and time again it has been proven that TheMAN knows what the fuck he's talking about.

Some of the Mazdaspeed folks are gonna do it. Search over at http://www.msprotege.com

P.S. The miata engine is in some first and second gen proteges :)

but it doesn't tell me if it affects the 2.0 protege which is what my initial question was

I know. But I just felt like being a nit-picker, sorry :)

edit: err well the MSP folks are 2.0 also. Is there anything on the other forum? :dunno:

since some people didn't make sure of the search feature on the miata board nor actually account for the fact that all mazda 4 bangers are laid out the same even if they are different families or internals........

the oil pump is driven directly off the crankshaft... that's right, it is splined into the crankshaft snout itself and the crank pulley rests right next to it... with the absence of the harmonic balancer from the pulley, it will cause premature wear and tear to the oil pump itself which will eventually fail on a boosted mazda piston engine... why? the secondary vibrations inherent in a 4 banger changes as piston/rod/crank load changes which will in turn results in different load stresses incomparison to an engine that will barely go over 1 bar manifold pressure (if well tuned)... these load stresses have different effects on components under those conditions... something that I can't explain because I'm not an engineer and it will most likely be mathematic

the man nailed it, also here is a thread on the silly forum, started reading but my eyes are tired, don't think it's BS but it could be

edit nah just search that forum yourself
better yet just listen to the man ;)

UDPs were regarded as "redneck tuning" for the longest time, from the old domestic muscle car hot rod days till now... and still is... serious domestic tuners have avoid it until they got really bored after maxing out their engines and wanted to have fun with a few more hp and blowing their shit to pieces :D

from what i found on the miata forum earlier, they said that on a turbo miata the oil pump went in 2k miles, but it cont to said that a N/A miata hadn't had problem with it yet. thats what the search button found me

I know nothing about harmonic balancers, but is that apart of the orginal stock pulley? And if so is there a way you could ad it onto the UDP? I am really sorry if this question is retarded.

Phantom Cruiser Mar 29, 2003 10:18 AM

I don't have a turbo Miata or a Dinan BMW, although the information was very interesting.

I have come to the conclusion that for every step forward this forum takes, it also takes two steps backward.

What Walight and myself are looking for is people who have actually done this and have the experience to share with all of us. What we are not looking for is "use the search button" and "you guys are morons", which seems to be the standard response around here.

If you are not PRACTICING it, then do not PREACH it. Theories are good, but real world experience is better.

"Thank you, drive through!"

so who's willing to be the first guinea pig to test out a UDP on the 2.0 FS engine????

come on guys/gals, have some balls! :D

I should have my pulley on by this weekend...heard nothing but good things from a couple of Protege5 and MP3 owners I've talked to who have it installed. I'll keep everyone posted but not interested in the bitch sessions...or hear about how I'll blow my engine.
