underdrive pulley

has anyone finially bought one of these yet. i know they work well on just about every other car in the world, just didn't know how they were on a protege. thought and opitions are welcome. i did a search and i can't find anyone with one yet

walight01 Mar 28, 2003 10:27 AM

noone has bought one though, they have been alot of debates over them but noone has bought one for a 2.0 protege and or even tested it either. so next time read the searches you find

I was wondering about the UDPs also...I saw them on CorkSport for $195.

But alas! I fear that no one has done this mod, or dyno'd it, or even cares:tear:

Perhaps I'll be the guinea pig?

Kopp0041 Mar 28, 2003 01:32 PM

I've been waiting to hear if someone has done this as well. I've also read all of the arguments, but am still waiting for proof or not weather they work.

I know of hundreds of Focus owners who have done an UDP and have not blown their motor, so how is it that you have come to that conclusion?

nickkaranikas Mar 28, 2003 03:55 PM

your NOT going to blow the motor

TheMAN Mar 28, 2003 03:56 PM

oil pump failure

We don't have Fored Focus motors first of all....

so what your saying is that on a miata motor if you remove the origanal pulley and put a aftermarket one on, it won't have the proper damping and it will cause the oil pump to stop working due to vibrations??

...or Miatas for that matter.

Plus, I'm not FI.

Thanks you idiots

WTF is wrong with you guys? I am sick of you wanna be know-it-alls trying to spout off all of this shit about don't do this or your engine will blow up. Your justification is a Miata engine? As someone cleverly pointed out, we don't have Focus engines and I guess we could infer that we don't have a fucking Miata engine either:eek: .

On a website which is supposed to be related to Proteges and their care and feeding, I distinctly get the feeling that most of the supposed experts couldn't find the gas cap with a road map and a burning rag sticking out of it.

Use the search button? The resources are shitty. Before you run your mouth about the search button, you should check the results. I wouldn't be surprised to see underdrive pulley search pull up a 17 page thread on a cupholder mod.

If you don't know what the fuck you are talking about . . .STFU! Special thanks to The Man for posting a link to an unrelated engine and for managing to remain KING FUCKTARD on a fantasticly vacuous site dedicated to people who prefer neon and body kits held on with drywall screws rather than squeak a few extra horsepower out of their car.

Thanks for playing. I hope your new washer nozzles cause you to throw a rod and cause your fuel pump to go out!

holy jesus man, calm down. i dont see you spreading any light on the subject, why dont you enlighten us on your theory's, so we can see your point of view. by the way dont forget to take your prozack again.

dude ina mirage Mar 28, 2003 11:35 PM

4 cylinders have 1/2 the forces on the crank as compared to a V-8 at the same RPM. Additionally size, weight, materials, lengths of components attached etc will affect the frequency and amplitude of any harmonics created. It should be noted that an engineered system such as the dampener with its attachment to accessory pullies will have to deal with the additional forces involved from the accessories themselves (ever calculate the force along the belt when the a/c kicks on or off...or the change in resistance when the steering wheel is turned and the power steering pump has to work harder). That being said...all those who don't want to use underdrive pulleys should not remove any accessory belts either.

BTW I have 45,000 miles on my 4 cylinder 1.8L mirage with an underdrive pulley. When I pulled the bottom end at 42,000 miles (37,000 miles with underdrive pulley) I found no excessive/abnormal or even insignificant wear along any of the main bearings for the crankshaft in my engine...it looked and measured up just like brand new still. Additionally when a mirage owner with an underdrive pulley had the vibration along the accessory belts measured (using factory equipment since he is a mitsu service tech) there were no frequencies found at any rpm out of the ordinary as would be found from additional harmonic vibration of the crankshaft.

Time and time again it has been proven that TheMAN knows what the fuck he's talking about.

Some of the Mazdaspeed folks are gonna do it. Search over at http://www.msprotege.com

P.S. The miata engine is in some first and second gen proteges :)
