im interested in converting my automatic transmission into a manual. im wondering what i need to buy (links to site if possible).

Another car with a manual tranny already in it. :D

The swap is possible, but there are significant differences between M/T and A/T Proteges other than just the tranny. They include the entire electronic control system for the automatic trans, at least one (possibly more) of the motor mounts, the brake master cylinder (M/T cars have a connection to the clutch cylinder), the pedal assembly and possibly even the gauge cluster. The cost of buying all of the parts at a dealer will be outrageous, and will far exceed the trade-in value difference between an A/T and an M/T car (and possibly the trade-in difference between an A/T Protege and an S2000). :( Obtaining used parts MIGHT work, but BJ-chassis Proteges are so new that you're going to have trouble finding suitable donor cars in the yards, and the prices will still be pretty high.

IMHO the only economical way to do this swap is to obtain an entire M/T donor car. My advice is to forget the idea right now. :D

I agree. It would cost quite a bit to retro fit the car. You would also need a clutch pedal and all the linkages, new center console and who knows what else. Also think about the labour costs. I'm going to assume you are going to have a dealer or some other mechnic do the work. I would figure at least $1500-2000 in labour costs alone! Plus the fact that the auto option was $800, you would stand to loose quite a bit. I would take carguycw's suggestion and trade it in.

My friend was interested in swapping from auto to standard and he asked the price.....the guy quoted him about 3000 bux cdn to swap everything...and prob not as good as the stock one either....:rolleyes:

I simply don't believe that quote for a BJ Pro. Maybe for a BG using all junkyard parts- I would guess you could buy an entire wrecked 90-94 M/T LX for about $400 USD at an insurance auction. However, given the going prices for totaled newer model cars in my area, a wrecked BJ donor car will probably run at least $2500 USD. Convert to Canadian money and add labor- it does not compute. :D

I'd have to agree with the rest of the guys. It just aint worth it... :( Consider a SportMatic.

so i could just get all the parts i need from a wrecked protege (hoping it is pretty cheap) with the same motor and exchange the current parts with the parts from the wrecked protege and of course add the additional parts?

You make it sound so easy. Just pop out the old engine and drop in a new one. It still takes a lot of time and tools and know how to swap engines and transmissions. Since you have all the tools and some poeple to help you, it's only costing your time. But someone that takes it to the shop is going to get charged quite a few dollars to have this done.

If you get a wreck at an auction, the parts maybe cheap but if you have to hire someone else to do it then it's going to cost ya.
