shifter question

I was doing a search regarding b&m short shifter and someone mentioned that the silver peice on the top of the stock shifter can be removed and the **** put back on??? is it just threaded on there???? if so this would be a great cheap mod for us wallet tuners out here?? has anyone done this or can anyone enlighten me here? I dont want to break it but if it just twists off i'll do this instead of spending $150 on the b&m...thanks for a quick reply

NO it does NOT just thread off....in fact the top part is a vabration dampening technique used on stock shifters.....that top part has a hollow center which has been filled with a shock absorbing material of some sort...like RUBBER...and then its put on the actual shaft...but its molded on.....it does not come off that easily....I have heard of people taking a small torch and heating it up till the rubber got soft then twisting it off with vice grips.....then you would have to thread the remaining stub..or use a shift **** that doesn't require threads.....like the momo ones......

now...do not think you are going to end up with a short throw shifter....cause you are NOT.....is the shaft shorter? sure....does it significantly shorten the throw? NO....and you still have a sloppy feeling stock shifter....which is nowhere near the quality piece that the B&M shifter is.
