Dusto,
I'm not saying that what you're hearing is necessarily 'normal'
for a cold engine. What I'm saying is that, in very cold weather, engines normally sound really rough on start-up. So perhaps even if we are hearing the same noise, we perhaps aren't thinking immediately 'oh, a problem with the engine', but rather, 'oh, it's friggin' freezing again this morning... hmm, my engine sounds like kife... what else is new?'
Maybe by june, when temperatures get up to somewhat liveable, and we still hear the noise (if we do), then we may realize... 'hey, what's that goddamn noise? maybe those yanks DID have a point.'

MP3 owner... Have the rattle when its cold.... Usually between 2500-3500 rpm's. On the Protege MP3 board others have complained about the rattle. Sound like a tin vibration against metal when the engine is rev'd. Or maybe this is a whole new rattle...

I live in Toronto Canada.
Lateley we've been having warm weather for the winter. anything from -5 to 10 Celcius (20 to 50 F)
My engine rattles between 2000-3000rpm. And it also feels sluggish between those rpms. when I go above 3000 it suddenly lurches forward like it just gained 30hp.
This has been happening for the past 2 months.
I've never experienced a car with such a noisy engine. Even in the dead of winter.
I'm not pleased

I don't really have a rattle noise, but I do notice on cold mornings, my car sputters in first gear. Like it can't decide if it wants to be in first gear or in neutral. It almost seems like there are air bubbles in the fuel line from the cold and when I start to drive, the air is pushed out causing the sputtoring. It stops after the engine warms up.

I was watching a tv show on this a lonnngggg time ago, before I knew anything about cars (I still know very little). They said that it's normal since the engine isn't warmed up yet, and some things inside the engine haven't expanded yet. The expansion isn't great, but it makes up for this small rattle, so it's normal......

So, according to someone over at Edmunds, this rattle on startup in the cold is a "known problem" and can be solved by reprogramming the ECU. Here are the details (I'm quoting from an Edmunds post):
According to Mazda the problem (and I quote from the technical bulletin), is "the result of the timing between VTCS plates 'opening' and the ignition spark advance command". It's my understanding that the reprogram will simply adjust the timing during warm-up.

I recorded a sound clip and converted it to an mp3 file so everyone should be able to play it. I recorded it this morning, it was about 30 Degrees Far. and I popped the hood and reved the engine to about 3000rpms 4 or 5 times. Here is a link, let me know if it does not work for anyone.

Engine Rattle 'o Fun
I took mine to the dealership and complained during its last service. The service people did not know why it happened and would only say that it was normal for this car. I get nervous taking people in my ride because it sounds like a piece of crap until the needle gets in the middle range of the thermostat. Wake up Mazda! This is unacceptable.
