Question Has anyone heard about this?

Today I was speaking with a guy at Visions here in town. He is a fellow P5 owner and we were chit chatting about our cars. He mentioned to me that one of the sales people at Sunridge Mazda, said that there was going to be a performance chip sold by Mazda that would increase the power of the 2.0 to 160. It does sound far fetched to me, and get this the price is supposedly $400 CND.

I just wanted to know if anyone else heard about this or knew the truth. Thanks in advance for any info.

I would imagine he's on crack. Highly doubtful.

I did not get any information as to what kind of chip it was. The guy just told me that it was going to be from Mazda. I will be going back to Visions to get my stereo installed, so if I see the guy there I will try and get some more information out of him.

I can not imagine how a chip alone will add a 25% power increase....or nearly that anyway....sounds like he is dreaming

heck if they do not want too much for it (and it is a Mazda non-warantee voiding thing) I'll take the 10hp!

Might this just be the MP3 ECU?

chips for NA cars arent that great unless you have a lot of internal mods... but for factory turbo cars its unbelieveable.... yeah i dont think with a chip our cars would gain more than 12 hp....

i owned a 2001 Golf TDI (diesel) and with a chip i went from 90hp and 155 lb-ft to 150 hp and 260 lb ft.... and with my other mods i was even higher... god i wish i didnt get rid of that car.. it was such a sleeper...

There was something on the news tonight about some new power chips that performance shops and dealerships are selling...

they said they were available for every car on the road... and were about $400... So they are probablly the same thing that the visions guy was talking about...

They said that the chip would give you about 10 to 15 hp depending on the vehicle, which sounds a little more realistic to me..

Regardless of the increase claimed, it is my understanding that there is no socket PROM in our ECUs and the chip can not be replaced. The unit can be reprogrammed in the vehicle though, just waiting on someone to crack the code.

I have heard rumor that Mazdaspeed is planning on offering a ECU upgrade where you swap the whole box as a core. That would especially be sweet if the WOT open loop is removed and the rev limit increased. Just wishful thinking though.
