Engine Swap

I noticed that a 2.5 litre (from the 626) V6 will fit in the protege engine bay. Any Thoughts?

Note I also think the SVT version of the engine (I know it's from a ford, but it's basically the mazda engine w/ a ford badge) will also fit. 200 HP in a 2800lb car = Zoooooooom Zooooooooooom. :)

$$$ x TIME = project car

Given enough money and time anything can be done. google "Shocus" or Shogun"

$$$ (Don't have any) + Time (Have a lot of) = Not happening any time soon.

the SVT Contour V6 engine is NOT the same engine as the 626/MX-6 2.5L V6...the are just the same displacement....

Maybe you don't need that much time? There's a guy in Canada who has done and will do the KL-ZE swap. So a couple weeks and 6000USD later you'll have a turnkey 200hp Protege.

Roddimus Prime August-20th-2007 09:31 PM

$6k usd is a ton for 200bhp. I bet I could get 200WHP from an NA protege fs-de for half that. Anyone wanna guinnea pig for me?

JoshP5 August-20th-2007 10:15 PM

Maybe, but 200 NA FS-DE WHP will have to come at 8K+ RPM, and it'll run like ass below 4K, where the KL-ZE would be smooth, reliable, and driveable.

Unless you're talking N2O, which I know almost nothing about.

Roddimus Prime August-20th-2007 10:44 PM

n20 wouldn't be NA and I bet I could get the fattest powerband an NA fs-de has ever seen.

If I had my own shop (next year in GA it looks like) I'd alreay have this up and running.

Johnnyblkdx was in the process of getting everything together for me to start on his factory freak. I'd started ordering materials and everything and then he dropped off the planet.

J-Protege August-20th-2007 10:59 PM

I'm planning to drive my Pro until my FSDE goes out on me, then paying for a KLZE swap.

I like my protege enough to keep it going after the engine kicks out on me. Unless the body is in real bad shape, or it has a list of problems, I wouldn't want to spend 15k+ on a whole new car.

Roddimus Prime August-20th-2007 11:21 PM

I have so many project ideas kicking around in my head I'm dying for someone with another beater to just leave their car with me and pay for the materials. I'll do the work for free!

p.s. When trying to get more power out of the car you have to first understand what it's bottlenecks are. Once you do that you'll probably figure out how I'd build it as an NA motor.

Skeptical but interested. Care to explain how?

Roddimus Prime August-21st-2007 12:29 AM

nope...i just wanna do it first!. In retrospect I have to retract that statement. It probably won't be the fattest curve ever since I won't have a turbo or FI of any kind but I'd bet dollars to dimes it'd be the baddest (stock block) NA protege around. Throttle response out the ass and a top end to make you cry.

The sad thing is I've got Millers old spare engine just sitting in my shop floor right now but the bottom end needs to be rebuilt first...I'd use it but it would be a waste of time...of course everything else would fit for trial purposes.

JoshP5 August-21st-2007 07:45 AM

Yeah, 200WHP is possible at very high rpm (maybe 9 or 10K) but the radical cams, reduced displacement from a necessarily shorter stroke, and high-flow induction and exhaust systems required for efficient breathing at that speed will just kill the low end. It would make a great race engine!

Roddimus Prime August-21st-2007 10:08 AM

no way....you're thinking in terms like Honda...

Think about what it takes to make power. Think about what our cars lack. Think simple.

JoshP5 August-21st-2007 10:23 AM

Efficient breathing at high RPM is the only way to get more than 100hp/liter NA on pump gas.
