Question Cooling fan paranoia

Hi all,

I have a feeling that one of the radiator fans on my Protege 2000 is always on despite it is still early spring and temperatures are quite low. That fan is the one on the driver side, the one on the passenger side comes on whith AC only. Maybe it is just because the fan motor is aging and getting more noisy, so I can hear it more clearly. But here is what I noticed: if the engine is cold and I switch it on, the said fan comes on once the engine reaches certain temperature and *never seems to come off after that*. However about a year ago I once had to warm engine up to change oil and at that time the fan kept coming on and off every few minutes. The engine temperature seems normal under all conditions and warm-up time is no different from before. Does anyone know what is the "normal" behavior for this fan anyway and how to check for it?

Thanks in advance!

This is usually backwards of a fan that is problematic. Most fans won't come on at the proper time, your fan is staying on constantly. My advice? BE thankful, most people alter their fan controlls to be able to keep them running all the time. Don't worry about the motor burning up. They cost like $20 and can be replaced in about 5 minutes. I prefer to have my cooling fans running all the time. All it will do is help cool the coolant. Remember your engine is regulated by your thermostat to about 180*....by keeping the fans on you may notice the temp to be about 175* or so....this is a good thing. I run a 160* "super cool" t-stat in my track cars to ensure that coolant is flowing as quickly as possible....then it's up to the fan to keep it cool....sounds like your fan is doing what it is supposed to.

Thanks all for encouragement! I take it my Protege is trying to signal me that it is time to race it before it is too late Seriously though overcooling *can* get nasty. Once upon a time I owned european Ford Escort with thermostat stuck open. The damn thing routinely took like half an hour of summer street driving just to warm up; until then it stalled on every intersection and guzzled gas like crazy (it was carb, not injector - yes, I am *that* old ). Actually it was recent drop in gas mileage that made me listen to my Protege fan. You see, I am not a racing enthusiast - I am rather into sensual pleasures of listening a feeling my vehicle running like a Swiss watch. To each his own. Peace

I am having trouble getting black shrouds right now. I will keep at it.

These are the slim fans. They are a total of 2 5/8" deep. This is a pretty big improvement over the stockies for clearance.

Here are the details:

FLEX-A-LITE 12-inch Electric Puller Primary Fan With Controls - 1250 CFM (190)

The Focus Fan is based on FAL's popular low-profile electric engine-cooling fans. It attaches directly to the radiator mounting brackets with the included custom brackets. No drilling or fabrication is required. This fan has a much higher cooling capacity than the OE fan and is great for vehicles with modifications.
- Lowest Profile Industry Wide!
- High Performance CFM rating!
- Lightweight Nylon Shroud With Full Contact Rubber Seal!
- Includes On-Board Adjustable Thermostat and A/C Relay!
- Fan Specifications
- Mounting Surface Required: 15 x 13-1/2 x 2-5/8inches
- Fan Diameter: 12-inches
- Fan RPM @ 13.5VDC: 2000
- Number of Blades: 10
- Air Flow @ 0-inch static pressure: 2000 CFM
- Amp Draw: 9.5 amps
- Mounting System: Custom Brackets

It is designed for the Focus. I am going to hook one up for the PR5 and let you know what it takes to mod it. The only thing different is the brackets. It replaces both fans and can be wired to the stock harness or comes with seperate controller. It has an adjustable thermostat that can be set to come on between 175-220F if you prefer to use that.

We have already sold a few of these and they are excellent.

I'm just looking for slim fan stock replacements, don't need an extra controller or anything, I need the clearance. Let me know how the install goes!
