Another test for you. Take a can of starter fluid spray and while your engine is idling spray it at various points where your intake manifold bolts to the head. If you find a spot where the engine suddenly bogs down when you spray it there you've got an intake leak (too much air in the air/fuel is too lean).

I just went through this myself and fixed the problem by replacing the intake manifold gasket. When I was researching this problem, I found others had also had intake gasket leaks on their 99's...

Plus, my local dealer who read the code (not for free of course) said it was probably the gasket because, "that's where they start to leak." Sounds like a not-uncommon problem from that remark.

just fyi....when diagnosing O2 sensor faults it's usually a good idea to start by removing and cleaning the O2 sensor with some brake parts cleaner first. I've done this and been able to prolong O2 life by almost double by cleaning them off every 30K or so.

btw, not all OBDII codes are standardized. From what I gathered when researching a code on mine, anything up to 1000 are standardized, after that it could be manufacturer specific. Here is a good link for Mazda codes:

I too have P0171

I too have a P0171 code that appeared recently. Purchased a code reader for $60 bucks...what the dealer wants to pull the code!(And they said they might not be able to diagnose in 1 hour...another $60!)

Did anyone notice any drivability problems when the CEL came on? I had stumbling like the car was low on gas then the CEL came on 1 min. later.

I have reset the CEL a couple of times (the weather can have an effect...obviously not that...I still have a CEL on). I have found the CEL will come on a day later. It's like I have to drive the car then shut it off and when I drive it again I get a CEL.

found the problem!

It seems I have a leaking intake gasket at cylinder #3. I used the ether trick.

Would it be advisable to toss on some injector o-gaskets as I will probably have to remove the fuel rail for access?

This is just great...I broke my 12mm socket last weekend!

you could replace your intake gasket. It's not that difficult. I just replaced all the gaskets on mine. You would want to do the dynamic chamber gasket at the same time. They're not that expensive, either. Just make sure you install them the correct way.

BTW, welcome to our forum.
OBD2 codes only start with P if they're powertrain related.
P= Powertrain
B= Body
C= Chassis
U= I forget
