Check Engine light ...[HELP]

I just got a check engine light on my 2000 LX. (42,000 miles)

I just noticed it this afternoon. only thing I have done recently is my custom catback exhuast last week.

any suggestions ?

the car seems to be running fine.
no high temp or anything.

should I drive it for a couple days and see if it goes away or bring it in to the dealer right away ?

thanks in advance...

I doubt that driving it will solve the problem, but if it is running OK, it probably won't hurt anything either.

A cat-back exhaust should not have directly triggered a CEL, but maybe an O2 sensor got knocked loose or something.

Also: check your gas cap.

Someplace like AutoZone can read the code for free and at least tell you what's wrong.

Hmmmm.

thanks for the info

I wonder if I should reset the ECU and see if it comes back ??

how can I check my CEL code ?

how do I get it first?

reset the ECU to see if it goes away... sometimes small **** will trigger a cel with our cars. it could be your intake. you have the injen cai... which will cause the MAF sensor to get dirty and throw a cel. take the sensor out, and clean it carefully with a q-tip and some alcohol. if it doesnt go away after a cleaning, and a reset of the ecu... then have the code checked by autozone or whatever to see what it is.

well, I just got back from autozone and I have a code.
===========================================
P0171.
explanation:

The PCM has determined the during testing, the fuel system for bank 1 was too lean. (bank 1 identifies the location of cylinder#1, while bank 2 identifies the cylinders in the opposite bank)
=============================================
so what the hell does this mean ??

sounds like a vacume leak maybe ?

I did just get a new exhaust last Tuesday (June 10).

what next ?

UPDATE:

I cleaned the MAF and reset the ECU. it seems to be gone for now.

I did notice that the o-ring seal on the MAF is torn so I need to get another one of those.
I was thinkin of putting silicone around there, anyone everdone that ?

dood, did U use the tire or inner tube ?
Would silicone do the trick too ?

and are U sure all the filters are shitty or just the earlier models.

I thought mine was a K&N filter pretty much.

and one thing I did notice when I was cleaning my MAF yesterday was all the streaked dirt marks inside my intake pipe.

BTW I cut my Injen, it is no longer cold air just more like a short ram. it help the hesitation a bit.

and since I put my exhaust on I dont have any hesitation anymore.

sorry, yes.. the innertube. it's thick enough to make a good seal. silicone i wouldnt use. the filters on the earlier models were shitty, but the filter still lets in a lot of dirt through the pipe. you've cut your intake to make it a shorty, which is what i've done also... this makes it so you should clean the MAF, like every time you clean the filter. and also, as for the dirt streaks on the inside of the pipe, thats easy. just take the intake off, push a towel through it and it's clean. i've done all this before... you should check some of my older posts for these problems.

MAF sensore

Cactus,

I just had this same problem on my 2000 LX. I took it to the dealer and they replaced the MAF sensor for free. You may have already found it in the FAQ, but there's a TSB out about this.
