Broken Tranny - syncro fork 5th

Anyone have experience with a Protege 2.0ES 5 spd tranny? I just had a dealer replace my motor (bad rod bearing) and I got 20 miles down the road when 5th gear started popping out by itself. I held it in and pretty soon I had no 5th at all.
The 5th gear syncro fork is snapped off on both ends (far ends). Now, it seems obvious to me that the mechanic accidentally bumped the shift linkage/shaft hard enough to snap the fork. Any other ideas or confirmation of my idea?
Thanks!
