Make the hole bigger, drill another one, I don't know... It's just a MAT sensor...

hotprotege2002 April-9th-2003 01:59 PM

OKAY. When you say it is JUST a MAT sensor, what is that?? And is that sarcastical or should I really worry about it?? And the other person said I can stick it in the filter, and plug the other hole?? Maybe I will just leave it out and just dangle there and not worry about it and just look at my check engine and battery light.....

I think he meant the MAF sensor...and yes it is fairly important, as it tells the ECU how much air is going through the intake so it can set the right fuel and timing.

MAT = manifold air temperature sensor
You sound like your freaking out man,
There is nothing wrong with your car and nothing bad can happen from a little light being turned on.

You could leave it out but then, if their really is a problem with your car youll never know. So I recommend checking it using walight01's solution. Just drop it in to the filter and try it out it should be fine.

When its all good then drill out a bigger hole and put the thing in.

Oh dam well it turns out it probubly was the MAF.
Yeah thats definetly important.

MAT = NOTHING
MAF = Mass Air Flow Sensor
IAT which is probably what you really meant= Intake Air Temp sensor. If you've got a sensor on your engine you NEED IT.

hotprotege2002 April-9th-2003 04:44 PM

OKay so your saying, take the sensor and PUT IT INSIDE THE CONE FILTER?? Just drop it on in? Okay I will try that. I hope it works!

Are you sure you got the little rubber grommet AND plastic piece for the sensor off of your stock intake?

KYREDP5 April-9th-2003 05:15 PM

Just a little bit if info if anyone cares. <factoftheday> The reason the battery light came on is that the alternator uses the IAT to determine the amount of voltage to output. </factoftheday>

Ahh... I kind of expected this to be alternator thread with the mention of multiple lights coming on... Alternator belt snapped on my old volvo.... all the idiot lights lit up like a christmas tree :D

Ok I feel like the biggest dumb ass. You were right, I forgot to take the whole sensor off of the stock intake, i forgot the long little triangle thingy. Oops, all this trouble for nothing. Oh well.... SOUNDS GREAT THOUGH! I have already had 3 people ask me if I had an exhaust. Thats my next journey... Anyone wanna recommend a muffler or should I go all out and get the whole exhaust system??

Today I was driving and my little bastard sensor fell off!!! It was strapped to the shock tower, but I hit a nasty pothole and something happened to it...also broke my cone filter..like I said, nasty pothole. That is just the air-intake temp sensor correct? From past experiences w/ intakes...it ALWAYS throws a CEL when it loses its signal..and no it doesn't hurt the car...its just annoying...i guess I have to go to mazda and buy a new sensor! damnit...i hope its only 40-60 like u guys said...

sensor is $44.05 retail

from now on PLEASE buy a bracket and secure and suspend the intake in place... avoid making the filter contact any other parts.... I have had no problems with potholes with my HKS intake thanks to the brackets

but some dealerships have a markup. Hiley in arlington wanted to chage me 60 bucks for it, so i gave them the finger and went to freeman in hurst and i got it for 45 bucks out the door.

Same thing happened to me...my friend had to point it out. But about the exhaust, go for a full cat-back at least, not just the muffler section, unless you only want sound and looks. Cat-back will have slightly better performance, especially if you do plan to keep modding your car.
