AEM Intake Questions & Confusion
I've narrowed my intake choice for my manual transmission P5 down to the Injen and the AEM, but in searching the forum, I've come across something that has me confused. I have found photos of the AEM posted, and they look different.. Here is what I have found, and maybe you guys can straighten me out..
http://www.protege5online.com/For_Sa...Shortram_2.gif and this- http://images.cardomain.com/installs...33_11_full.jpg Both are identified as "AEM short rams" but both look very different. I'm looking more for something like the top photo, which places the air filter lower, but not as low as the Injen (if I go with the AEM.) Which is which? Thanks- T |
I beleive the top one is the ingen and the bottom one the aem.
|
No, the top silver one is the AEM short ram for the 2.0L. I know because that is what I have. I am not sure about the other one though.
|
Both are identified as AEM's.. The red one, I have seen pictures of it off of the car, and it's an AEM.. just different.. And before I go and start shopping around.. I want to make sure I am getting the right piece.

This is the photo of the red "AEM" intake off of the car.. T |
The one I have is AEM part #22-481C. That was the clear (silver)short ram for the M/T 2.0L. Hope this helps.

The top one is the AEM short ram for the 2.0 5-speed. The bottom one is the AEM short ram made for the 1.8L engine. The one made for the 2.0 won't fit on automatic tranny equipped Protege's, so AEM recommends you use the 1.8L version.
This has been discussed, so do a search if you want more info. |

get the InJen CAI!!! :) ________ FORD MOTOR COMPANY CINCINNATI PLANT HISTORY |
I was waiting till someone tossed a "do a search" into the thread. Read my first post and the phrase "searching the forum" was mentioned. I see different posts about one not fitting, and how there is an application for the automatic equipped ones, I see all about the rubbing, etc.. But I didn't see any mention that the AEM intakes were so different in their design that they looked so dissimilar. But, thank you cjb200 for the definitive answer, and saving me from doing yet another search. T |
I installed the AEm short ram air in my protege5 with a manual transmission. Despite the name the intake does go down deep into the engine bay. It works great and the sound that comes out of it is sweet.:bounce:

see in my 2.0 es i have the aem that's on the second picture, and runs fine. the only thing that worries me is the fact that when it rains i need to be even more careful that i don't get into high water. but whoever posted about getting a sweet sound was so right. i love it's badass

AEM Shortram confusion!
Ok, so here is my question! Those of us with a auto tranny know that there really is not that much difference in the spacing. I think that if you could hack off about an inch to inch n half that you would have no probs with fitment. I currently have the AEM short ram for the 1.8 auto on my 2.0 es and on a warm day here in good old Orlando, FL you can feel just how sluggish it is. I would get the injen cold air intake but I just don't want to suck water in one of this big ass pot holes on SR 434 (Orlando residents know what i'm tallking about!) Anyone with an opinion please feel free to repond.

goto your local speed shop and buy a 90 degree bend and hose couplers and make the extension yourself. Cheaper and it will work the same.

AEM Shortram confusion!
Thanks for the reply azrakain. howevever the local speed shops down here in Orlando are still wet behind the ears, I would probably have to go to the local Home depot or Lowes to find some piping like that. I have actually been toying with the idea of fabricating a direct air channel intake similar to the very restrictive version that came stock above the radiator. It sounds really good, and I have taken numerous photos and measurements on the engine bay to see if it will fit and work. For a example go to the Peugot Rally team website and there should be a pic of the engine and the direct air charge system they use. I will post some pics of the diagrams once I stop being LAZY!
Sorry about not providing a link! :( "more tea master?" |
so which one is your best bet if you have a 02 auto tranny? aem or injen?
